Honda Rebel CMX 250

Hi all, just got a honda rebel CMX250 1997 (US) now it is in the uk. Just wondering what is the MPG for my rebel, I have a standard red rebel with engine guard, back rest with rack, saddle bag bars and saddle bags.

So what is the MPG of my Honda Rebel CMX 250, with the modifications?

Also how much can the fuel (litres and gallons) does the rebel CMX 250 hold?

How many millage can I get from a tank using 95 Octane?

Thanks
Steve

Welcome aboard Steve.

With my '87 Rebel, I get about 72 MPG. In the US we still use the Queen Anne Wine Gallon, not the Imperial, or roughly 3.8 liters.

MPG will not be affected by octane. The Rebel runs just fine on 87 (Research method) octane.

Welcome to the forum. I get around 75-80 mpg (U.S. gallons) but have heard of folks getting 90 or more. Keep in mind that is probably optimistic due to the speedometer/odometer on the Rebel, which indicates about 5-10% above actual.

My Clymer service manual shows a tank capacity of 10.5 liters/2.31 Imperial gallons.

As Buickguy pointed out, the recommended octane is 87, and using higher octane will not improve mileage and may very well cause problems due to incomplete combustion.

How many miles you will get per tank will vary some with travelling speed and how much city riding you do. I usually reset the trip odometer when I refuel and when it gets around 100-120 miles start looking for a gas station.

I'm 6' 200 pounds, and average about 65 mpg at an indicated 65 mph. Slowing to 55 mph will raise that to 70+ mpg. Riding uphill, or against a strong headwind will easily drop it below 50 mpg. Jerry.

3.78 litres to the us gallon and 4.55 litres to the imperial gallon. If you drive it easy, you should get somewhere around 100mpg and hard in the low 80s if it gets around what my twinstar does. I have gotten close to 90mpg us but that is on long rides at or near a steady 45-50mph. having driven the british roads and things I would think an average of 90 would be about right.

Wow, I never heard of a rebel doing that bad on fuel. I have a windshield and all on my twinstar and have driven it on interstate ride where I am locked throttle all the time and the worst I ever done was just under 70. I usually fill up at around 150 miles and it takes just over or under 2 gallons every time. I am 6 feet and a little over 200 pounds. When I first got the bike all them years ago and weighed 155 pounds the bike would hit reserve at 170 miles all most to the mile every time and take 2.2 gallons. I used to keep record. I don't run them till reserve any more if I don't have to. My range is about 200 miles till slap out of gas LOL. My reserve quit working a while back and the gas was leaking through on "on" and I knew I needed gas but was late for work and I figured it would hit reserve and I could make it to work. Wrong!

I don't seem to get good mileage on bikes. I can understand that with stop and go riding on rural roads from stop sign to stop sign (one mile apart, like we have them around here) because I tend to use full throttle from a stop, and wind it way out before I shift, just in time to get through all the gears before coming to another stop sign. But I don't get good highway mileage either. My Vulcan 750 will get 50+ mpg on the highway at an indicated 55 mph, but move over into the left lane and crank it up to an indicated 85 mph (actual about 79), and mileage drops into the low 30s. Jerry.

Fuel mileage is greatly influenced by riding style. When I deliberately ride for maximum mileage, as in accelerating gently, timing lights, etc. I can get better than 80 MPG. In the real world, my riding is a mix of highway and stop & go. In traffic, I accelerate to get ahead of the pack whenever possible to avoid being in anyone's blind spot. Not maniacally, mind you, but given the choice, I keep myself where I have the best chance of being visible. On the highway, I try to stay out of the right lane, which means running at faster than optimal speed at times. I average about 65 MPG.

I stay with traffic in town. I like to run it up through the gears out on country roads where you can see for a long distance, and know there are no cops. Even then on the Rebel, because the engine is so small, I rarely break the 55 speed limit by much. On the interstate highways, I have no choice but to ride in the right lane at an indicated 65 on the Rebel, which is a GPS 50-60. You would get squashed like a bug in the left lane at much below 85. The speed limit here is 75, and as far as cops go, you are pretty safe up to 85. They usually give you 11 over, and only stop a small percentage of people going faster than that. And unless you are pushing 100, it's only a minor ticket. Jerry.

Thanks All

I run the bike on 98 Octane and it does make a diffence in Accel.

Thanks for all your comments but it is very varied view. Are you all talking about 250 CMX. Ideally I would like to run it down to reserve but I am worried about all the crap getting sucked though to the carp/needle.

I always run 98 octane cos I am from the UK. I have put though redex and was wondering if that was good enough to clean out the crap at the bottom of the reserve tank.

Would this be adviseable or should I say sod it and drain it out, clean it out and start fresh, how difficult is that?

Thanks Again
Steve (and yes, I am english and yes, I am drinking tea)
