I would install an in-line fuel filter (between petcock and carb), turn it to reserve, and ride it no farther from home than you are willing to push it back. If there is so much crud in the tank that it blocks the reserve screen on the petcock, then you needed to pull the tank and clean it any way. The inline filter should catch anything that may slip past the petcock screen, even if it is torn.
I am not familiar with Redex but I'm a great believer in Sea Foam. Unfortunately, it's not sold outside North America! One thing I would suggest is to get a mechanic's mirror and flashlight and look in the back part of the tank when it's empty. Removing the tank first may be necessary. If there are varnish deposits, use redex, B12 chemtool (if available there), or a good quality fuel injector cleaner added to a tank of fresh petrol at about 4X the recommended rate.
If you decide to pull the tank and clean it, I'm not sure if an acid solution will remove gum deposits. I know it will remove rust, and would think it would also get rid of other crud.

I ride a 2001 Rebel CMX250. I'm 6' and 300 pounds. I get 75-78mpg in town or highway. I usually don't run it over 65 mph and generally drive pretty conservatively. I use Shell "V-Power" 91 octane and add Seafoam every other tank. I also added an inline filter.

Hi new here, I own a Rebel 250 ,someone tells me it is a CA model and others say it is a CMX model, the year is 1995, problem with the bike is it wont fire, then on some days get on it and away we go, i replaced the cdi unit, and now thinking it could be the pickup coil, would a 2005 cb 250 pickup coil fit it? an has anyone have ideas of what is going on with it and what model is it.
Cheers

Welcome, Hornet. It can be both a cal. model and a CMX. CMX is the model name given by Honda. California has more stringent emissions standards than other states, so bikes sold in Ca. have additional emissions control components that bikes built for sale elsewhere don't have. I believe there is a canister of some sort, and a few feet of hoses running between things.

In the US the vehicle identification number is stamped on the steering head post. It'll tell you the year and model of bike. It's not like that in Australia?
Did you notice whether the bike was just rained on when these problems occur. It could be a lot of things. I would check every switch that kills the engine... handle bar kill, side stand and nuetral. I would also check the clutch switch, it doesn't kill the engine, but it would keep it from starting.
Welcome to the forum, I hope you can find the problem.

They didn't make the Rebel, at least in the US, in 1995. Available here 1985-87, and 1996-2009. This wiring diagram might help Honda Rebel 250 Wiring Diagram

I don't run them till reserve any more if I don't have to. My range is about 200 miles till slap out of gas LOL. My reserve quit working a while back and the gas was leaking through on "on" and I knew I needed gas but was late for work and I figured it would hit reserve and I could make it to work. Wrong!

In ~ 18 months of ownership my '96 Rebel never got better than 55 MPG, and as little as 46 MPG. The new 600CC VLX has surpassed My Reb in every fill-up so far at 58.6 average to date.

If you pull your plugs, you could compare them to the chart.

I recently did a 500-mile round trip on just about 7 or 8 gallons. This equates to between 62 and 71 mpg, riding at 70 MPH indicated most the way, in strong winds, carrying a 225 pound rider. Not bad, IMO.
