trans output shaft oil leak

recently rebuillt top end on a basket case 450, bike runs perfect. the problem is a leaking tranny output shaft seal. removed drive sproket and started the bike. seal is leaking from the outer edge. Thirty year mech and never saw a seal leak from the outer edge. not leaking at the shaft wear edge, but the case edge. anyone ever seen this? also, the inner seal, looks like it works as an oil slinger as it rotates with the output shaft. please advise.
thx
Dan

I'm not familiar with the 450 engine, and don't know if the seal can be replaced from outside. I did replace the countershaft seal from outside on an '81 Suzuki 450 once though. However, if it is leaking around the outside of the seal, and the seal is properly installed in the case, you might be able to clean it with brake cleaner, and put some kind of sealer on it. There is also the possibility the seal may be dried out and have a crack in it. My Honda XR400 leaks a little at the countershaft seal, but it is not enough to worry about. It hasn't gotten worse in over 3 years. Jerry.

Leaking on the outside? Did you check to see if the case was cracked?
