I wanted to get some new brake shoes for the rear brake and for the same cost I ran across a rear brake assembly from an 07 (ours is an 86). I am sure this is probably old news but they are not compatible. There is a thicker outer lip on the newer models that don't allow the assembly to slide into the rear hub. It could be modified with some grinding but I decided it would just be safer to get some new shoes. Also, the newer shoes do not match up with the older shoes as they changed the shape of the "pivot" point opposite the brake cam. Heck, the only parts that are interchangeable are the springs and the cam itself.
So if you are looking for a "classic" rear brake assembly just buy the parts for your bike.
The rear axles are universal though as I have an 08 in place of the 86 I had and it works great.
