Mileage on a 1986 450

I'm looking at buying an '86 450 Rebel in good condition for a most reasonable price but with 16,000 miles.
Should I be concerned about the high mileage?

That's less than 1000 miles per year. My shoes get more than that.

Re: My question on mileage on '86 450...

Thanks for the replys about the Rebel 450 mileage. I agreed that 15K was acceptable and have gone ahead and purchased the bike for a most reasonable price. Now my concern was & is that after the engine starts at first crank....it runs a few seconds (quite well) and then stops immediately, as if a light switch had been turned off.

A knowledgable friend feels the carburetors are set too rich (evidenced by the blueing of the header pipes) and that, if adjusted, they would need to be synchronized and that can only be done by a Honda dealer.

Any comments or thoughts...

Thanks,

Don

I'm not familiar with the carbs on a 450, but lots of other dual carb bikes can be synched by shade tree mechanics. If I have time in the next day or two, I'll post how to fabricate a home made synchronizer that is much more accurate than the store bought models. If I recall correctly, costs about $3-5 to make. If you're in a hurry, go to vn750.com and search for carb synchronizer.

I have a 86 450 Rebel with 128,000 on it. If the bike was taken care of it will have a long life ahead of it.

I've got a 1987 450 with 28,000 miles on it. Runs like it is just off the showroom floor. Doesn't burn any oil and has given me no problems.

86 450

no one is talking $, i may have over paid, but i bought my wifes bike a few months back, around 12k miles, i paid 1200 if i remember right, checked air in tires, oil level and drove home 50 miles,
since, did as good a cleaning on carbs with out removing, treated tank to make me feel better, now doing fork seals and front caliper because one leaked on bottom of tank after last ride.
i have had at 80mph, overall including maintenance stuff which should not count , i have less than 1400, and would not be scared to take anywhere.
it is not as confortable as my ultra classic, and no where near as fast as my low rider. but it does get as many compliments.

Upgrading to a 450 Rebel

I have upgraded to a 450 Rebel. The 250 has suffered two engine failures trying to ride with my husband to Guzzi Rallies. We don't ride particularily hard, but I'm ready for more BHP.
Maybe the reason for engine failures! Returng from the NY Rally
On my first trip last year the brand new to me, 450 failed about an hour from home. We had to get a new exciter box and I'm back in action. Hope this year will be trouble free. The bike is in absolutely perfect appearance condition and runs very well now.

We have moved to Honor, Michigan as our permanent residence, rather than spending 1/2 of the time in Florida. I'm a Michiganer and love the north woods.

Louise
