how many miles is too many ??
I don't currently have a bike, but I'm seriously thinking of getting a rebel.
I think I should buy used. They're are a lot of good looking ones out there but I don't know how many miles is too many.
I don't want to have to rebuild it before I get to ride.
Any thoughts?

Welcome, Sean. It would be best if you knew someone who is familiar with bikes to go with you to look at them. I don't know if we have any forum members in your area, so I don't know if anyone here can help in that regard.
This site has some pointers to consider in general.

Maybe I should have asked "how many miles (with good maintenance) can I expect to get out of a rebel before needing rebuilt. 10 20 30K+. My wife just picked up a 1980 kawasaki KZ250 with 2800 miles on it. It was treated like crap it's whole life and now runs like a top. I plan to get a rebel, ride it for a while and then give it to her.
Then buy a new bike and bob the kawi.....(don't tell her that)
Is there some place on this forum to post high mileage?

The owner's manual has several tables in it regarding service intervals. Clymer's does as well. I think if you run search on the topic, someone has probably posted it, or will respond in the thread. In general, 2800 miles is two oil changes, and just getting warmed up. These things can go for many years with basic maintenance such as oil changes and valve adjustments. I can't speak to Kawi specs, but they have a good rep as well.

I've heard that you can expect at least 70K before needing a rebuild. Others say 100K.

It's remarkably rare in the motorcycle world to find a bike for sale that's worth dismissing purely based on miles. Few people really ride them enough to wear them out. On the boards I've been involved in for each bike I've owned, there have always been examples of riders with well maintained motorcycles running well in excess of 100k miles. That's not to say that you'll always be able to get that far without an engine rebuild, but it's by no means out of the question. The few thousand miles one finds on a typical used bike are nothing to worry about at all, except when trying to talk the price down a bit. I'm over 25k miles on the Vulcan 500 and it runs fantastically well.

Fastpakr, you speak a great truth! Around these parts, most bikes are in the scrapyard well before they reach terminal mileage. Most die from pure neglect.

Yes, I'd be much more concerned with a bike that lacks love and maintenance, than a higher mileage example that has been well taken care of.

If you can bring a friend knowledgeable about bikes to look at used ones with you it will potentially save you money. Also google Dan's Motorcycle Repair Course for tips on buying used bikes. Good bikes are on Craigslist everyday. Wishing you luck!
