How can I get the gas cap off the tank without damaging?
Hi! I have a 450, and am going to replace the gas cap. How can I get it off without damaging the tank? I am restoring the tank...there is a lot of rust inside and a couple of pinholes. Don't have a key!!
Thanks!

Don't have a 450, but most gas caps have mounting hardware that is accessible once you open the cap. Remove the screws/bolts/rivets, what have you, and the cap comes off.

Forgot to mention that I don't have a key...
Just added this in the original post, but I forgot to mention that I don't have a key for it.

If its the same key as the ignition you local honda dealership should be able to make you one with a code off the bike. Or if you can get another cap with a key you could use a flat blade screwdriver and force the lock and replace with said other cap.

Thanks, I think that's what I'm going to have to do. I already ordered new gas cap/key...wasn't the same as the ignition.
Thanks!

Did you get you the Kreem tank prep for your tank if so then it will get rid of the rust and fix the pinholes. I know what your going through I had to redo the tank on my cb750.

I don't want to start an argument here, but I definitely don't recommend using Kreem. It will make your problems 10 times worse. No matter how well you clean the tank, and no matter how well you install the Kreem, it will start to peel and come loose from inside the tank. But only part of it will. And there is no way to ever get it all out, because it was designed to be submerged in gasoline, it is virtually impervious to all chemical methods of removal. I don't recommend using tank liners of any kind, but if you are going to, POR-15 is WAY better than Kreem.
But first, since you have pinhole leaks in the tank, you need to remove all the rust (I use full strength muriatic acid, but you definitely have to be careful with it, especially splashing it in your eyes, or inhaling it. It makes a great rust remover though. If you don't want to use that, there are some more expensive, but totally safe rust removers out there. One of them is called Rusteco, and it works very well, but it's not cheap).
After getting the rust out, you need to check the structural condition of the tank. I have seen tanks with pinhole leaks that, once the rust was removed, turned out to be paper thin in the area of the leaks. You could peck on them with the rubber handle of a screwdriver, and make large holes big enough to stick the handle through. I know of no way to repair such a tank, there is just not enough left to repair. Your only choice is to replace the tank.
As for removing the cap, if you don't have the key, and already have another cap and key, just stick the biggest straight screwdriver you can find into the key slot, and turn it. You may need to use a wrench or vise grips on it, but it will break, those gas cap locks are not very strong. It's possible that several small parts may fall down into the tank when it does, but that shouldn't be a problem considering the condition of the tank. Good luck with it. Jerry.

I got a replacement tank and the original the replacement I had to go over a spot with J B weld to cover the sorry job the last owner did when he tried to patch a gas leak. I still have to get all four turn signals put on as he took front two off and put crotch rocket ones in the back . I just got a few more repairs to get mine back looking good.

One nice thing about the 250 is the availability of (relatively) cheap aftermarket gas tanks. I removed my turn signals with the intention of installing some of those tiny ones, but after finding out they were not legal, I decided against it, and am currently riding without turn signals, using arm signals, which is legal in my state. Jerry.
