To each his own/ You'll likely get a whole bunch of opinions on this subject, but suffice it to say that it's your choice. Depends on how much you value your noggin.

Which part of your head do you want to leave unprotected? Here's a diagram of the percentage of impacts per zone on a full face helmet. You draw the line and add up what percentage of impacts would not be protected by a half helmet. If it's a non DOT helmet, which most of those German type helmets are, just wear a bandana. You'll look cooler and it will protect about as well.

The answer is 61.4%

I've always wanted one, and looked into it not too long ago. Most of the ones I found were novelty and not DOT approved. None were SNELL rated. The closest I found to one that looks similar and is offers relatively good protection is the Bell Drifter Combat:

This is the best 'half face' German helmet. Just wear it flipped up to get the 'half helmet' look.

This one in white will be my next helmet. Just waiting on the Euro to tank a little more. The lower the Euro, the cheaper the helmet.

Those are great! I have a BMW System II (made by Schuberth) and really like it. It is getting a bit long in the tooth these days and I also plan on another Schuberth.

Nice looking modular. I couldn't find a price on the site. How much are they? Something strange about modulars: of the one's I've tried on, only the really expensive ones fit. I'm not sure how I should take that.

It's easy to make helmets based on Bowling ball shapes So therefor, those of us with enhanced cranial presence are more likely to have harder time finding proper fitting protection.
Of course I'm just kidding

Not far from my conclusion that they make them to fit the most common head shape, with the assumption that those of us that know that they don't fit are smart enough to be able to afford the expensive ones. Of course I'd never say that in public.
