Brake Shoe Clarification

So the 86 needs a new set of brake shoes. I bought a newer rear drum off of ebay thinking to upgrade the whole deal in one shot. No go. Turns out the rear drumb of the newer brakes are not compatible with the older rims. There is a metal lip that prevents them from fitting in at all. Then I think, pull the newer shoes and put them in the old drum. Again, no go. Even though the diagrams of places like BikeBandit show them to be the same, the end of the old shoes are rounded where the newer shoes have a dimple. So not even the shoes are interchangeable.

Does anyone have any advice on where to find the old style shoes for an 86 Rebel? I am not interested in swapping out the entire wheel just to replace some worn shoes. Any help would be appreciated.

TIA

If someone else doesn't respond with the correct information, call Jack at 407-865-4101. He'll know.

Thanks. I did some research and found the Honda part # I needed. For any of you fellow 85-87 Rebel riders here it is: 06430-KBG-700

There is an older part number but Honda switched it to this and I have verified by diagram that this is indeed the correct shoe. I plan on ordering a set tomorrow and will update if anything goes amiss.

Honda made a LOT of changes between the older Rebels and the newer ones, most of them are not noticeable just by looking at them. I have no idea why they made so many changes, I like the styling of the '80s Rebels MUCH better than the newer ones, specifically the handlebars, the sidecovers, and the smaller headlight. I'm glad they upgraded the headlight to a halogen unit, but they didn't need to change the size of it to do that. I would be much happier with a new or near new '80s Rebel than the '04 I have now. Jerry.

Sounds like you need to find a resto project. You'll get something you want and you'll get somthing to do. Idle hands are the tools of the devil.

Not that long ago, I had a really nice '85 Rebel. I had it for less than 2 months when it was stolen out of a parking lot. I searched for several months for another nice '80s Rebel, but was unable to find one, so I finally gave in and bought an '04 in great condition. One of the first things I did was replace the sidecovers with the ones from bluecollarbobbers. They don't look as good to me as the original Rebel sidecovers, but look way better than the newer style covers. I would also like to replace the bars with the older style, but I doubt they would fit without having to replace all the cables and brake hose, making it an expensive job. I may go ahead and do it eventually, along with having the BCB sidepanels chromed. Currently my Rebel is already a project, I had to relocate the footpegs and shifter, and am currently working on the rear brake. I want it to look as stock as possible. I never have idle hands, I currently have more projects going than I will ever complete. Jerry.
