2002 250 rebel idle problem

I am having a problem with my 2002 Honda Rebel. It has been sitting around for many years. It only has 180 miles on it. We were able to get it running, but it does not stay idle. Any suggestions on how I can keep it idle?

We have put gas treatment in it and hope that will fix the problem, but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Seafoam is supposed to be excellent for a varnished carb, but it might take a couple of tank treatments.

Your making all of us envious- 2002 with 180 miles

Welcome to the forum.

If you don't already have one installed, put an in-line filter on the fuel line between the petcock and carb. I like the clear kind so you can see if there is crud coming out of the tank. Have you checked the tank to see if it is rusty? If yes, you probably need to clean it. I posted one procedure here recently on another thread.

If you can locate the drain screw on the carb, drain the gas, replace the screw, and fill the carb with straight SeaFoam. (There are a variety of fuel treatment products, but none that I know of work as well as SeaFoam.) Let it sit for a day or more and then drain off the SeaFoam. Add 8oz of SeaFoam to a full tank of gas and ride it like you stole it. Rev it up pretty high while riding and quickly release the throttle. Do this 5-10 times to try and dislodge anything gumming up the carbs. Repeat with another 8oz. of SeaFoam if needed in a second tank of fresh gas. If this doesn't fix it, you'll probably need to pull and clean the carb. The procedure is posted on the forum.

This ought to get you going. Let us know how things work out.

At a minimum, replace the gas. Change the oil. check all the hoses and cables. Remove the plugs and turn the engine by hand a few times to make sure the valves are opening and closing. It would be better to remove the valve cover and inspect the top end for gunk, and run a bit of oil through the cylinders before cranking. If any engine sits that long, the gas is shot, and any moisture in the crankcase has caused some rust. I wouldn't fire it up until I was sure everything is moving properly so as not to cause serious damage. Also, make sure the tires are sound, and the brakes work before hitting the street. A bike like that would be worth some work and patience to keep it like new.

If there was gas in that tank while it has been sitting around, get rid of it. If the seafoam thing doesn't work, you will have to take apart the carb and soak it to clean it out.

If it runs fine but doesn't idle, then you might just need to adjust the idle screw and thats all there is to it.
