Arrow Trail of Tears Remembrance Ride Sept. 18 - 20

In case I missed this being posted somewhere, here's the link for the
2009 "Trail of Tears Remembrance Motorcycle Ride."

This ride is for a great cause, follow the links and read all about it. This is also a giant ride of the year. I think I read that one time the line of riders was twenty-eight miles long! I'd love to go, if my bike would ever get here, and I could learn to ride! Check out the link:

http://www.trailoftears-remembrance....eschedule.html

I know there are some folks here that can tell us about this one!
The column on the left side of the linked page has history of the Trail of Tears, as well as history on the ride. I'm 1/16th Choctaw, I hope to see you there. (I'm hoping to meet up with the ride in Heavener, OK, where there will be a pit stop.)

I went on this ride right after Sept 11th happened . There was talk of cancling because the country was still in shock I'm so glad they had it .Let me tell you that that ride stood for two things that day . I have never seen that many people lined up on both sides of the street in support and all the flags for the country! Wow. I haven't been on one that has meant more emotion than that one. Sept 11 was a horrible time in our nations history as was the cruelty inflicted on the Cherokee Nation.

I will say this about the ride itself. It is not for the person who just got a bike. There is usually a death or two from accidents every year. Most believe it or not caused by other car drivers not paying attention to police officers directing traffic. There is generally a rubber band affect that goes on for most of the ride. You will be going along at 60 miles an hour and then have to slam on your breaks and go 10 for a few miles . There is no rhyme or reason to it it just happens. It amazes me every year how many people think they can ride . Trust me there out there!

I knew I wasn't ready for it, so I didn't go.

Last week I did my first 40 mile ride. Also the first time I took my bike up to 65mph. That's what the speed limit was on the rode I was on, and I was okay with that. What surprised me was how I'd see a car in my rear view mirror for 2 seconds and then VROOOM! Car's went by me like they must have been going 150mph. It's quite different then when a car passes you in another car. I also passed a few semis coming from the other direction, but the wind from them wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I wonder if my windshield helped me or worked against me. I'll say it helped.

Anyway, thanks for the advice. I'm not riding outside of where I feel comfortable. I got that advice on this board.

I'd like to see pics of the ride though too.

I always have to reel myself back in when I'm feeling a little over confident, so its good that you didnt ride outside your comfort level... the other day I was turning right into a gas station and there was a rider on my left that gave me the wave, and stupid me while I was stopping I looked away and waved back, lost my sense of speed and almost ran the bike into someone coming out.... luckily he stopped or I would have ran into his front bumper.

I am constantly reminding myself to not be in a rush or ride outside of my comfort level... just gets ya in trouble. Going on another 100 mile ride on the 4th and it might possibly rain, so that just may be a good time to take it easy.. lol

Lightbulb Newbie Waves: Warning: Noobs beware!

Hey ASE ~

Boy did your comment remind me of something the other day on my first 40mi ride. I was headed out to the country on a 65mph highway, my first time going that fast. Hey, not bad, this feels okay... oncoming semis created quite a swoosh, maybe because I have a windshield, or maybe less than would be if I didn't have one. I don't know. Cars passing me at what seemed like 125mph was strange, made me feel like I was standing still.

But that's not the story. Here it is: A fellow rider passed me and gave me the familiar biker wave... the low hand to the side. Alright! My first "solidarity-with-other-bikers-wave." I tried to do the same and found out that the wind drag on an arm & hand at 65mph was substantial. I didn't like that feeling and reminded myself that I'm not going to ride one-handed.

When I was a teenager I was riding with one or no hands on my 10-speed Peugeot UO-8, hit a pothole which turned my front wheel to a 90º angle, and OVER the handlebars I went. Before my hands could come up I made a 10 point landing right on my face... off to the emergency room, etc. I can't IMAGINE doing that at 65mph. Thank goodness for full face helmets.

Anyway, thanks for the reminder to stay within limits. May we never forget!

You said it kayak... I remember a few good spills on my bike as a kid and all the stitches that went with it, even bit through my tounge one time too. And yes those trucks cause quite a "swoosh" especially 50-60 MPH goin the other way.. YIKES, and I dont have a windshield. Always remember though, even if you dont wave, theres gotta be a good reason, and that I will remember before I decide to try to turn and wave again.. lol, got lucky that time, there'll be plenty more wavin opportunities.

Keep both hands on the grips, the shiny side up, the rubber side down, be seen, heard and ride safe... Goin on a ride tomorrow, and I just finished checkin the bike over, and wipin her down. We are ready to roll. Last big ride of the year. Its 100miles for a guy I work with at Firestone. His wife passed away after surgery complications, and left him with 4 kids. I think we have over 50 bikes in it.. will give details when I get em. Night all, looong day tomorrow.

Had a good ride today, about 40 bikes showed up, and everyone arrived to the destination safe. We did lose one bike due to a broken throttle cable, but all in all, was a great day. I even won a $25 gift card to motorcyclecloseouts.com, beauty part is it's close to my house.. woo hooo.. save on shipping!

Glad you had a good ride.

So sorry to hear about your buddy. Now he transforms into SuperDad. One great thing about families that still HAVE both parents... if one unfortunately passes away, at least they still have the other, in this case, your buddy. I hope he turns out to be the best dad ever.
