Tricky neutral

Has anyone here tried to modify the plate on the end of the shifter drum to make neutral easier to find.It seems if the notch was just a bit deeper it might not go skipping past as easily.Might make the 1-2 shift more difficult but it might be worth it.The part 24435-KB4-670 isnt too expensive so unless someone says been there done that Im gonna try

Please let us know how it goes, and please measure and tell us how much deeper you are making the groove. On mine sometimes I can find neutral at the very first try, other times I have to try several times before I find it. I seldomly look for neutral with the engine running. When I'm at a stop light ALWAYS 1st. When shutting it down, always first. The only times I look for N with the engine running is when I pull over in a parking lot to swap gloves, or put on ear plugs before entering the interstate. 99% of the time that I look for N with the engine off (pulling, pushing the bike before cranking it up) I'll find N on the 1st try.

Same. It's extremely rare for me to try to put it in Neutral except before starting to let it warm up for just a minute while I throw my jacket, gloves, and helmet on. Once I'm on the road it never goes into neutral.

For me the neutral is fine.
I sometimes accidentally hit neutral when up shifting after a red light, so I have to be careful to fully up shift. Any deeper for me could be scary :P lol

And I throw mine in neutral after I park, so I can crank it without mounting in the mornings.

I use neutral when I pull into my driveway, unless I have the garage remote in my shirt pocket. The easiest way I found is to shift up to third and then down. If that doesn't do it by the time I come to a stop, I ease out on the clutch in first until just before it wants to grab a little. Then it slides in every time. I wouldn't try to modify the internal parts. No telling what the unintended consequences might be.

I have trouble finding neutral in my 2009 Rebel with the engine running (either at rest or moving) ... usually have to fiddle between 1st and 2nd several times before success (rolling back and forth if I'm at rest) ... and almost always 2nd to N, almost never (if ever) from 1st to N. The ONLY time I can ALWAYS find N is when I'm riding up my steep driveway in 2nd and give myself a final burst of speed, then clicking into N before rolling to a stop ... it's clearly a design flaw, probably since it was first designed.

I have never had any problem finding neutral on the Rebel, it is one of the easiest shifting bikes I've ever had. But, I almost never use neutral. I always keep it in 1st at red lights, and almost always park it in first. When I get back on, I just pull in the clutch, start it, and take off. If I pull off the road briefly for something, I stop in 1st, and shut the engine off. About the only time I use neutral is when warming it up or pushing it around the garage.

Back when I first started riding, most of the bikes I had made a loud CLUNK when shifted into gear with the engine running, and as a mechanic I knew that wasn't good. So I got into the habit of always starting them in gear, and I still do. Jerry.

My 09 is the same way. I just kill the motor and it goes right in. Saves wear and tear on the shifting parts that way.
It may get easier for the 09's with more miles on them but I'm ok with it.

my 85 does not go into neutral when running, I've literally sat on the bike for 10 minutes rocking it back and forth looking for neutral. the second i hit the kill switch it clicks into neutral first try.
