Cool Graphs. Max RPM Shift Points.

In summary, it looks like 14/33 puts 55 mph hill climbing right in the best place. I guess I'll leave my gearing alone and not be afraid to rev it a little higher, lol. 14/31 would probably put it too early in the powerband...

However, if I lived somewhere flat, I think I'd probably drop to 14/31 or 15/33 to get a few more mpg.

I think I am firmly in the Jerry camp of Stock Gearing now, though. ;P
Great graph's Leaf,

Very interested. The more we know about our Rebel's, the better.

Could the max torque developed, be graphed in each gear at this site ?

Using max torque, as the shift point.

My understanding of the term PowerBand. The point in the rpm range where maximun torque is developed.

Well, that site says it's 8250, which I think I seldom hit. I usually run 3rd up to 45 mph, 4th up to 55, then shift to 5th and cruise...

I have been flipping through the shop manual here and there when I take breaks from work, but I can't find an "official" mention of it there...

I'm not sure about calculating torque without a dyno. Presumably if we had a dataset describing the torque at the crankshaft over the engine's RPM range, we could use that to extrapolate the torque delivered to the rear wheel by multiplying it by the overall drive ratio in each gear (I think?). Or at least approximately, assuming that 0% of the crank energy was lost during delivery to the rear wheel. Trying to take imperfect power transmission into account would probably turn it into a very vexing differential equation, the likes of which I haven't had to solve for the past 12 or 15 years and have forgotten how to do. Gonna get the 14/27 combo so my Rebel will hit 115 mph!

Just kidding!

Only thing I can add is the odd-even gear ratios are called hunting and the even-even gear ratio is called non-hunting and the only difference is that if one tooth has a defect on the non- hunting the noise will consantly repeat where the hunting will not.

I'm assuming they mean Honda cars. I have had several Honda motorcycles that could do that, and so can my '85 Camaro. Of course you can't do a proper burnout or pull a wheelie in a Honda car, they are FRONT WHEEL DRIVE. Jerry.

Cool Update to MPH to RPM chart

. . . . . . . . . . What a Wonderful Day to be Alive and being able to See and have My Driving Privilege Restored. . . . . . . . . . .

One more surgery to go thru and the end will be near. First Rebel Ride this Year, actually First Ride since November 20, 2009.

After a brief warm up ride, I had a couple of movie moments. Top Gun, the need for Speed, Stars Trek, going where no one has gone before. While recouping from my crash, I spent a lot of time on the Internet. Finally found the information about Torque and HP explained so I could finally understand the complex relation that is associated with engine Power. More abut that later.

Back to the Ride. Since a stock Rebel will attain 80+ mph, now is the time to see if my sprocket change will allow me to obtain it also. Having a good 10 miles of good clear highway, why not. Here goes. Accelerating to 20 mph, shift to 2nd, 40 mph shift to 3rd, 60 mph shift to 4th, 80 mph shift to 5th (overdrive). Maintained that speed for the next 5 miles.

Slowed down for a 45 mph speed zone. Cleared speed zone. Down shift to 3rd, 60 mph shift to 4th, 75 mph shift to 5th (overdrive), now will it pull to 80 in 5th gear. Yes, in about 10 to 15 seconds. Encountered some 3 and 4% grade hills, speed dropped 3 and 4 mph. Back up to 80 mph for the next 3 miles.

Had to stop for a red light at an intersection. Follow traffic for next 7 miles at 65 mph. Another Red light. Make right turn on red light, no traffic. Accelerate to speed, shifting at 20 mph for each gear. Maintained 80 mph for the next 4 miles. Close to home, ride coming to an end. So Sad.

Now I can add this to my mph to rpm chart.

I think most Rebel Riders will appreciate this information. I don't think it will be found anywhere else.

The following information was collected from my own personal Rebel. For reference ONLY. YMMV.

_______ Sprocket Size Combination _____ 14/33 ___ 14/30 ___ 15/30 ______ 14/27

___________________ Trans Gear _______ 5th ____ 5th _____ 5th ____ 4th ____ 5th

Indicated Speed in Miles Per Hours ____________ Engine RPM's

____________ 50 ___________________ 5000 ___ 4600 ____ 4200 ____ 4800 ___ 4200

____________ 55 ___________________ 5500 ___ 5100 ____ 4700 ____ 5300 ___ 4500

____________ 60 ___________________ 6000 ___ 5600 ____ 5200 ____ 5800 ___ 4900

____________ 65 ___________________ 6500 ___ 6100 ____ 5700 ____ 6300 ___ 5300

____________ 70 ___________________ 7000 ___ 6600 ____ 6200 ____ 6800 ___ 5700

____________ 75 ___________________ 7500 ___ 7100 ____ 6700 ____ 7200 ___ 6300

____________ 80 ______________________________________________ 7700 ___ 6800

Over 10,000 Test miles on 14/27 Sprocket Set. Average over 100 MPG.
