Any idea where the starter clutch is on the '86?

Ok, but also, the engine cut out while running, after having started. Could something there cause it to cut out?

ok went back an read your first post and this started after you had a heli-coil put in the head , so to put a heli-coil in you drill out the hole retap then thead in a helicoil,
if someone was to do all that with the motor in place with not a lot of room there
he may have skinned or nicked a wire just above the head ,i would get a light look at that area real good , sorry im not much help

New theory:

Under the seat is a vent that leads to the Air Filter.
From there is a tube that leads to something else.
Could the smoke from under the seat be coming from there?

Else, perhaps it is that small bundle of wires under the seat.

The crank case breather tube goes into the air box. I guess it's possible that if the rings gave out, you'd get a lot of exhaust blow by. So your saying that the engine is seized? Have you tried to put it into gear and push it to see if the back wheel can move the engine at all?

It's starting to sound worse.

I have put it in gear and gave it a push to make sure it wasn't in neutral. I didn't try to move it though. Just was checking for neutral. But when I get a chance I can try.
I also did try to bump start it. I have never bumped started anything before and my dad tried to walk me through it over the phone. I never started but I may have been doing it wrong.

I pushed it with the clutch pulled till it got going a bit then released it into 2nd gear, also tried 3rd. Never did anything. Jut sounded like it was trying something.

If the engine were seized, when you let out the clutch the bike would have stopped rolling and tried to fall over. Since it appears it didn't, I'm still thinking you have an electrical problem somewhere. Get that fixed, and you are probably back in business.

Here's my attempt at written instructions for push starting. Note that I don't think this will help you until the electrical problem is resolved:

With the fuel and key in the ON position, the kill switch on RUN, and the choke at normal starting position, put it in 2nd or 3rd, say a prayer, and launch that puppy. Let it develop about as much speed as it will and let out the clutch. Doing this going downhill helps, but remember if it doesn't start, you will have to push it uphill! Do NOT try to tow the bike behind another vehicle. There are videos on You Tube of less than stellar minds attempting this. Note I said attempting!
