Rocks in my tank

I was trying to clean out my tank and noticed it sounds like I have some rocks or sand in the tank. Tried flushing it out with water but not much luck. Any suggestions? I'm repainting it and need to seal a couple of pinholes. Any suggestions are welcome.

Sounds like a PO used rocks to clean rust out of the tank and didn't remove all of them! If by chance he/she was smart and used metal nuts, a telescopic magnet will get them out if you can see them! If what you hear are rocks, drain the tank, remove from bike, remove petcock and see if they will come out the petcock hole.

My suggestion is to get another tank. Think you will be more satisfied/less frustrated and on the road sooner.

You could use your vacuum cleaner. If the vacuum hose is too big to get in there, just use a smaller peice of hose or tubing and use your hand or duct tape to make it adapt. Then it's just a matter of shakin' the tank around to get the stuff into vacuum range.

:
Make sure there are no gas fumes in the tank if you do that!

Thank all. Guba that is a good idea. Didn't think of that. The tank is off the bike with the petcock and screen removed and it doesnt seem to want to come out. I would love to get a new tank but I'm on a low budget.

It will eventually be a bobber project but for now I just want to get it running decent. The rocks do explain my carb problems also.

Oh and no fumes. I will make sure of that...Thanks!!!!

The original tank on my 85 sounded like that and it was full of rust. It was very difficult to get completely out with large vacuum, air compressor and moving it around.

I needed to do some welding on it and finally cut a piece out to replace with new metal and the rust fell right out.

Good luck on getting all of it out.
