new to the board. 86 cmx450
hello everyone. i just picked up my very first motorcycle a couple months ago. its an 86 450 as the title says. i will be putting up a couple of pics as soon as i get them on the computer. right now it has an idle issue so i have the carbs off getting them cleaned up and lubing the cables and all. i will be re sealing the front shocks soon, buying some new rear shocks, installing blinkers (removed by previous owner) and hopefully finding an exhaust somewhere because my H pipe isnt a full H pipe any more, the left side has rusted out. and i want to start off my stay here by thanking everyone for their tidbits of advice ive seen on here so far. ive been surfing the forum for a little bit now and have seen a lot of nice bikes and a lot of great adcice. well. thank you all. oh, 1 last question. are the 250 and the 450 rear shocks different?

Welcome to the forum. You might have a hard time locating an exhaust if you want a stock replacment. You may end up having to get and aftermarket one. As for the shocks I'm not sure but I think the 450 has taller shocks. Some one who has one might chime in.

Congrats on the acquisition. One way to tell if they are the same parts is to go to someplace that sells the OEM parts, like bikebandit.com (see link toward top of page) and look up the part numbers for both. If they don't have the same number, they aren't the same part.

Cool. I might try that tomorrow. And I know now I kinda put this intro thread into the wrong spot. And for the exhaust I've found one on eBay. I don't care too much if it is stock or not. I would like to change the looks a little bit but keep it looking like a factory would build it. And the bike has a few rust spots and isn't the cleanest which is another look I'm going for, "ridden" oh. And I just found out that she has removed the stock air filter I guess for better flow? I'll be finding one to put in. I've read that the 450 is a strong motor but I wouldn't want to compromise it.

NEB1373,
welcome to the forum. I have had a few 450's and and the shocks are different, longer on the 450. You can see my 2 450's under my pictures and if the switches on the handle bars are white you can see how I get them to look black again.
There are some great folks here who will help with any problems you might have keeping the bike on the road.
Welcome again.

Welcome. Best of luck on that exhaust. I passed up a decent deal on a 450 on Craigslist recently, it was in really good condition, but the seller had replaced the stock exhaust with a Jardine system, AND THREW AWAY THE STOCK SYSTEM. I almost cried. He was bragging about how the aftermarket system made the bike more valuable. I told him there were people out there that would have paid some serious money for that system if it was in the same condition as the rest of the bike. It seems nobody can buy a bike of ANY kind these days without putting some cheap tin can aftermarket exhaust on it. When I bought my '02 XR400, it was in great shape, except that someone had put an FMF exhaust on it. I took great pleasure in removing that thing and throwing it in the dumpster. I found a nice stock system with the factory spark arrester at a local salvage yard cheap. Jerry.

As I mentioned in another thread in this section (it's fresh in my memory because I just got done posting it before reading this one LOL), you will find that the distinguished list of parts that are interchangeable between the 250 and 450 Rebels can be counted on one hand.
It's simple and minor stuff at that: brake & clutch levers, mirrors, things like that. Nothing that is exactly sought after anyways.

I dont know if there too short but if you wanted to lower the back of the bike you might throw some 250 shocks on there anyway. But I like low and some dont.
