Gas leaking from hose under bike...?

Hey guys and girls...just bought an 04 Rebel had it for about a week now in my buddies garage. He and I rode it the first day to check see if it was ok everything worked fine...opened the garage today to start it up and check it out. After it fired up and was running i just happened to look down and saw somthing was leaking i touched it smelled it and it was gas...It was coming from one of the black hoses the are under the bike on the right side. I followed it up and it was attached to the carb. We couldnt figure out why it was just leaking like that...we wnet and bought an inline fuel filter put it on and it lekaed for a few seconds then stopped. Any idea why or whats happened???

Couple of things possible. 04 has a vented fuel tank. was teh fuel tank full? If it was and you stood it up, some fuel might have come out of the vent tube.

Another posibility is the carb float might be sticking just a little, jostled around it might have set again and stopped the carb from overflowing. Keep an eye on it. If it continues to leak, could be sticking and need a good cleaning.

The carb also has a drain for the float bowl. There is is scres in the carb to keep the float bowl closed, but if this screw is loose, the bowl will leak down one of the black hoses and out.....

I would tend to suspect a sticking float, or a float needle valve that was not seating properly. This may have corrected itself, but I still recommend removing and disassembling the carb, and giving it a thorough cleaning. I have cleaned a lot of carbs on bikes that were running just fine and not leaking, including my '04 Rebel, and found all of them filthy inside. Cleaning the outside does no good at all.

The drain on the very bottom of the float bowl is for draining the gas out of the bowl. I highly recommend doing this if you are going to store the bike for any length of time. You can check the drain screw and make sure it is tight, but don't over tighten it, the float bowl is aluminum, and it is easy to strip the threads, and then you will have to replace it.

If it continues to leak, and you don't want to tear into the carb, there is one more thing you can try. Turn the petcock to the off position, remove the fuel line from the petcock, loosen the screw on the bottom of the float bowl, drain out the gas, tighten the screw, fill the carb full of SEAFOAM (great stuff) through the fuel line and let it soak for 24 hours, then drain it out, tighten the drain screw, put the fuel line back on the carb, and turn the petcock back on. This will fill the carb up with gas. Now, put about 2 oz. of Seafoam per gallon in the next couple tankfulls of gas. If that stops the problem, then use Seafoam in the gas every so often to keep it from coming back. Jerry.

When ever I fill my tank and squeeze in juuuuust a bit more gas in the tank, I get fuel dripping out the vent hose. That's my two cents. Oops, forgot about deflation. I mean, that's my one cent.

Are you turning the petcock off when you park the bike? The fuel level in the tank shouldn't have any affect. Check your fuel hose to be sure it is properly attached, clamped, and has no holes or splits. If the drip is coming from the carb itself (which would be my guess) probably either the float is sticking (possibly due to a piece of junk in there) or the float level is too high. In which case I would return it to the party that cleaned it and ask them to make it right for no charge. It might also be that the float needle isn't seating properly, which could be due to needle or seat damage or inadequate cleaning.

Riding the bike increases the use of fuel, so it doesn't "overflow" at those times. But when the engine is just sipping gas at idle, the flow/leak exceeds the engine's demand for fuel and you get the drips.

I would suspect the needle valve is bad. When you start it the initial fuel usage will drop the leve in the bowl enough to stop it overflowing. Let it ldle a bit ant the bowl fills back up and overflows.

From an experience I had, the needle valve had a small (very small) groove in it that caused an overflow condition. Replaced valve and it stopped. Could also have some varnish build up on the rubber part taht is causing it to not seat properly.
