Fuel tanks

Ok....just another problem in the list of 'em. My fuel tank is leaking near the seat. I am curious to know what tanks are compatible? Anyone have a used one for sale at a decent price? Is it possible to have the existing one welded? I have a 1985 Rebel 250.

Refresh our memories please.

What year and model do you have?
(e.g. I have an '87 CMX250C)

Ok, the classic Rebel uses a vented gas cap. The second generation Rebel uses a non vented cap and has a vent tube underneath.
I'd check with Jack and see if they have a nice used classic Rebel tank.
It is possible to have a tank welded. It can be expensive and many places don't want to or won't weld a gas tank.

Case in point, I had a '73 Ford wagon one time. They had a habit of rusting through the gas tank around the seam line. I priced having it welded. The one shop that would do it wanted $250 to do it. I got a brand new tank from a Ford dealer for $75.

I wrote an email to Jack already, just waiting on a reply. Thought I would investigate it during the wait.

Depending on the cause of the seepage it is possible to seal it from inside. I have a 3.4 gallon tank that was seeping around the seams and the rear mount welds. I sealed it with Caswell Phenolic Epoxy. So far it has held up, over 3k and some very rough roads. Costs about $40 to do 10 gallons worth of fuel tanks. Company claims to be able to seal/fill holes that are properly prepped.

I have about half a can of Red Kote sealer. Would that work if the leaks are small enough?

No trace of rust, gasoline or other petroleum product left in the tank. Just clean, bare metal. It's not easy to achieve, which is why so many tank linings fail.

Don't get me wrong, it's not that hard to do either, but most folks aren't willing to take the time to do it right. And they don't understand that by not doing it by the numbers they are shooting themselves (or the next owner) in the foot.
