frustrating ...

I cleaned the carb on my '86 250. put it back in and set the idle speed. the bike runs fine. next morning start her up and other than being a little cold natured she ran fine once warmed up. I did not run her for 2 weeks. now she won't stay running. took many many attempts to get her to simply idle. once warmed up she has no throttle response. she sputters and dies when the throttle is twisted.

Could the carb really be gummed up after only sitting for 2 weeks?

Also, not likely related, I see some oil leaking from beneath the flywheel cover. It looks like I will get to replace the oil seal behind the flywheel. This couldn't be what makes the bike run so poorly, could it? grrrrrrr

I would turn the petcock on, and loosen the float bowl screw, and drain a few ounces of gas through the carb, and see if that helps. Since you just had it all apart, you may not have gotten everything back right, and something came loose. Especially check the choke. I've always found those cable operated "enrichner" things to be troublesome. I like the old fashioned chokes with a flat plate that opens and closes the throttle bore.

The oil leak is unrelated, and probably is that seal, as there is not supposed to be any oil behind the flywheel cover. If the seal is actually coming out, you have a problem. If it is just leaking between the seal and crankshaft, and not leaking badly, it could run for a long time like that. Unfortunately there really is no way to tell without pulling the flywheel.

There is another likely possibility. It could just be oil from the chain that has collected inside the sprocket cover, and is running down to the lowest point on the engine. I would verify that it is an actual leak before actually pulling the flywheel. I've never done it, but I hear it is a real PITA. Jerry.

Do you have an in-line fuel filter installed? Did you blow out the orifices in the carb with compressed air when you cleaned it? Is there rust in the tank?

Sounds almost like the choke cable broke,

yeah, I have an inline fuel filter. The tank does have _some_ rust but not bad for a 24 year old bike. The inline filter should (I would have thought) take care of it.

I am wondering about the choke. The bike dies almost immediately when I apply the choke. hmmm.

I just can't believe that the carb could gum up in just 2 weeks.

thanks for the info.
