droping out of 2nd

it started a few months ago, about once a week when i shifted into 2nd it wound drop it self back down into netural, now its happing closer to 2 times a day. im starting to skip 2nd alltogether to avoid the issue. Is this a serious trans problem or can i get away with a cheap fix?

I've had a similar problem. Have you changed the oil lately? You pretty much described just how it was for me, it seemed like 2nd gear just didn't want to stick, about twice a day. This is usually a good indicator that it needs new oil, as I believe the Rebel is a wet clutch system. I'm not an expert, but I don't feel it's a huge problem. Oil change fixed it completely, and when if I catch it happening again even once, it's time for new oil.

I would go with what Clopay says, because you don't want to have to take the transmission apart. There are things inside the transmission on the sides of some of the gears called "Dogs". They're tabs that protrude from the sides of the gears and engage with the sides of a gear that is next to it. Over time, the sides of these Dogs become worn to the point that they're beveled on the sides. Since pressure is being applied to the sides of the Dogs, it has the effect of puhing the gears away from each other, disengaging them. That's the Poping back into neutral you feel.

Here's a good visual on how the trans works.

Change the oil and hope for the best.

Mine does this constantly when shifting from 1st to 2nd at a stop light.

All I can do is make sure I fully shift and let the clutch engage completely before shifting again.

Are you saying that this is happening as you're pulling away from a light ? I mean, you're not stopped at a light and shifting into 2nd right ? (I know this is probably a stupid question, but just wanting to be sure)

PS
We lived in Lawrenceville, GA for a few years.

I've had these issues when my oil was reaching the 4,000 mile change period. The first signs happened around 3,000 or so. At the time I was using Honda GN5 oil and Mobil 1. These oils don't last for the full 4,000 that Honda says it's supposed to. You can feel the difference in the oil just by rubbing it on your fingers. I started changing the oil every 2,000 and the problem went away. These oils just don't stand up to the shearing action of the clutch.

I switched to Castrol GTX based on a members advice and I must say, it goes the full 4,000 miles until next oil change with no shifting issues. The only drawback is that my gas mileage went down slightly. I also notice the gearbox whines a little more.

I actually live in Lville.

And yes, it occurs from a standstill pulling away. When I get in second, sometimes itll drop into neutral and rev like crazy and not go anywhere while im in the middle of an intersection. It is quite frustrating at times.

Is the shift linkage pivot points properly lubed? If the bike sits out in the rain or gets washed, the shifter will become harder to move and may not travel the full range for proper shift. Just something else to consider.

Now that I've ridden (is that a word) the Rebel 250 for a bit I have noticed that there is a pretty fair piece between 1st and 2nd. I can see how it would be easy to miss, especially for a new rider. As Guba mentioned having it properly lubricated, as well as adjusted is critical for proper shifting.
