First off you shouldn't be using the choke unless the engine is cold.
Second you should have the idle adjusted to 1400 +-100 RPMs. Check the pilot screw and see if the stop tab is still on it. If it is, then you shouldn't have to adjust it. But if the stop tab (limiter cap) is missing (or filed down) then you might have to start from scratch. The black knob is actually the throttle stop screw.
To adjust the idle: - Turn the pilot screw in completely (but not tight). Initially back it out 2 3/4 turns. Pilot screw is under the carb in the middle towards the cylinders.
- Warm the engine to operating temp (book says stop and go riding for 10 minute is good for this)
- Stop engine and connect your tachometer
- Start engine and use the throttle stop knob to adjust to proper idle speed (1400 +- 100 RPM)
- Turn pilot screw out to reach highest engine speed
- readjust throttle stop screw
- turn pilot screw until engine speed drops 50 RPM
- readjust throttle stop screw
- glue the limiter cap back on (book says Loctite 601 or equivalent) put on so the screw can be turned clockwise only to prevent adjusting too rich.
