Returning to the fold.
Hello to all!
After a 44 year hiatus I have returned to the fold of bike riders. My first bike was a Triumph Trophy 500 in the late 60's. I sold it after marriage, grad school, service et al.. So, now I'm 61 and I have earned the right to start making up my "bucket list". After gaining permission from "she who must be obeyed" (my dear wife of 34 years) I purchased a 1986 Rebel 450 in Monte Rosa Silver. Took the Motorcycle Safety Foundation course (on a 250 Rebel) and added the M designation to my license. Several of my fellow high school teachers are helping me bring the "old Reb" back to a proper state of operation. I figure that since I now have all the parts in hand, I'm maybe two weeks away from rollin' down the highway. I can hardly wait. Thanks to all you fine folks for the warm welcome to this excellent forum.
Jim Henderson

Welcome! Lots of "late" riders here, myself included (53). Good luck with the restoration and happy and safe riding.
Jim

Welcome. Way to go on taking the MSF course. Be careful out there. Things have changed drastically since the "good old days" Now pretty much everybody behind the wheel of a car is using some type of handheld electronic device, and paying a lot more attention to it than to their driving. So they are not likely to see you, you have to see them. With that in mind, enjoy your return to riding. Jerry.

Welcome back aboard!
The 450 is a great bike and I think you'll like it.

Yeah, I seem to be the only old person here (51) that has ridden continuously since age 8. I have 2 daughters, but they never stopped me from riding, and in fact I got them into riding dirt bikes at a fairly young age, much to the horror of their mother. They had a few minor mishaps, but no serious injuries. I took it slow and easy, they learned right, and are now grown and both are excellent off road riders, outriding many boys. Neither has ever shown any interest in street riding, which does not bother me, since I know what the dangers are out there. As for me, I will continue riding as long as I can on 2 wheels, then switch to a sidecar rig. I will switch to a quad for off road riding. Jerry.

Welcome, Jim from a rider with a similar story to yours. I'm 65 and owned several PTWs in the late 50s & early 60s. I stopped riding when I got my draft notice in early 1965 (March IIRC). I flirted with returning to riding when I first moved to Louisiana in 1980, but the friend of mine who inherited a vintage BMW decided not to sell it. Thinking about it for more than 20 years, I finally did it in 2008. I'm a quasi-Virginian too, but I haven't lived in the state since 1973.
