I've got a 68 Honda CT-90, a 86 BMW K75c and now this 96 Rebel. I think I'm going to buy another Rebel in less glorious condition and after my wife learns to ride on it and graduate to the pretty one, I'll "bob" the beater or do a "cafe" thingy to it. There's a lot of inspiration in this forum for modding.

Bobbers seem to be the big thing. I wanted to build an old school chopper, with really long raked out forks, until I realized jut how complicated and expensive that would be. The frame would have to be seriously reinforced, especially around the steering head area, the steering head would have to be raked, you would have to use a different set of triple trees made for larger stronger forks, and modify them to fit.

After estimating the cost (I would have to have the frame mods done, I would not trust my welding on something like that), I discovered I could get a decent Shadow VLX600, and a Seeger Cycles chopper kit for about the same money, and have a bigger bike with a v-twin engine. Jerry.

I couldn't stand the thought of her dropping the bike while learning and my apprehension was making it difficult for her to practice, so I picked up this yesterday.

It's a '99 with 8500 miles and it's already got some scratches. She even added some today and I don't care.

It's still too nice. In AZ it should be easy to find an old beater that someone left sitting out in the sun, with all the plastic rotted and the paint burned off. I've seen several of them on Phoenix Craigslist. Jerry.

Nah, it's just photogenic. It's in worse shape than it looks with lot's of scratches where your knees meet the tank and on every turn signal, mirror, bar end and foot peg. It's been through a lot of parking lot tip overs and just had another one yesterday.

But, it runs very smoothly and I will use it as a reference to clean up the intake mess on the other bike.
