just got an '87 250 rebel
Well i just bought a 87 250 rebel off of craigslist for $700. It didnt run when i got it but i was told that the carb was probably the culprit. So when i got home i took the carb apart and cleaned it out and it started and reved up just fine...except for its missing an o-ring gasket for the carb and the air/fuel mixture screw was missing too. So i have a carb rebuild kit from siriusconinc.com on its way. I also ordered the mikuni choke knob since the previous owner stripped the plastic choke cable nut that screws to the carb. So i'll be working on this bike so i can get it on the road and learn to ride. For a first bike i think this thing looks pretty good considering its age.

Welcome to the forum. Hope the parts come in soon and you get it on the road. Make sure the tires aren't too old and in good shape.

Welcome! $700 is pretty good! Around where I live it's hard to find one under $2000. I just missed one for $1000.

Same here, cept I paid a little less. The tank had some rust. Cleaned it w/ Evapo-Rust; patched it w/ JB Weld. Waiting on S.C.I. kit too. Anybody know if it's hard to rebuid carb? We're going to have similar experience

Well i definately need to buy a new rear tire...because the one it is pretty much bald. Shouldnt be to hard to fine a new tire. But the gas tank is a little bit more tricky on this bike. It looks like someone put some sort of liner in it and that liner is starting to come off of the inside of the tank. Ive never seen anything like this and its hard to explain what it is. I can see where the tank might have leaked before so im gonna take the tank off and jb weld around that area...anyone got any ideas on how to get the tank cleaned out?

Welcome to the forum! J B weld works great for fixing holes in the tank. I had to use it on my '85 to fix a hole that the previous owner had punched in it. As for the lining, I have no idea, haven't had that problem.

Kreem and POR15 have been known to peel off after a bit of time. I read somewhere that using paint thinner, acetone or MEK will get the rest of it out. Once you seal the tank by what-ever means I would suggest trying Red-Kote to seal the inside. There are folks on this board that have had it in the tank for over threee years without any problems.

I used good quality paint remover. Acetone works too, but it removed/damaged the paint on my tank when a couple of drops leaked out, and it will eat duct tape (see below). You can't wash it off soon enough to avoid paint damage.
Remove the petcock and gas cap. I cut and drilled a plate to cover the petcock hole, put a couple of layers of duct tape over it to act as a gasket, and bolted it in place. Put at least a quart of paint remover in the tank, slosh it around so it comes in contact with the liner on the bottom and sides of the tank. Cover the cap hole with duct tape and slosh the top of the tank. Let sit for 30 minutes. Repeat until you can see that all the liner has been liquified by the paint thinner. Using a stick flattened on the end will help scrape the liner material from the parts of the tank you can reach. Wear eye protection! You really don't want that stuff in your eyes or on your skin or clothes. Remove the cover over the petcock hole and rinse the goo out with a water hose. Put a hair dryer on the low setting or a vacuum hose hooked up in reverse in the cap hole and dry the tank. If you get flash rust, rinse some naval jelly or Ospho in the tank to kill the rust. Then flush with water and dry.
If there is rust under the liner, google cleaning motorcycle tank with The Works toilet bowl cleaner. A quart is about $1.25 at WalMart.
When you reassemble, install an in-line filter if you haven't already done so.
