Hi Folks

Hello everybody,

New to the forum, but I've had my '87 Rebel since new.
It's Candy Wineberry Red (R 114C-U) and still running very well.
I did my modifications to it back in '88, nothing radical, just some minor
stuff for comfort and personalization.
I recognize a few names around here and look forward to some friendly chat about bikes.

Welcome. You've had your Rebel for 23 years? That must be some kind of record. I bought a brand new '85 back in '85, but sold it about a year later, when an opportunity came along to buy a brand new leftover '83 Yamaha XS650 (I didn't have room for several bikes back then). About 2 years ago I bought another '85 in really nice condition off Craigslist, and had it stolen out of a parking lot a month later. About 8 months ago, I bought a nice '04. I have already made a number of modifications to it, but nothing extreme, like cutting up the frame. It is currently one of 5 bikes I own. Jerry.

Thanks guys.
Junkyard dog, Yes, 23 years on it. I've had a lot of bikes in my time but most of them were used. The Rebel was my first brand new bike. I did buy a 90 BMW K75RT new and put about 40,000 mile on it then sold it in '98
At one time I had 26 bikes in the gararge and my wife had 2. 28 bikes was excessive and taking up too much space so we simplified. I kept the Rebel.
I had a couple of those Yamaha XS bikes, the Japanese Bonneville. One was a '72 XS2 with an XS1B front end, the other a '74 XS650. Sold them in 2004 along with everything else except my Rebel and my wife's Virago 920.

I'm 50, and started riding at age 8, on a Bultaco 125cc dirt bike that the local farm mechanic helped me rebuild. Since that time, I have had 45 motorcycles, about 20 of them bought new. I just bought a brand new '09 Kawasaki EX500 Ninja, paid cash (my tax refund), got it for $4500 OTD. MSRP alone was $5600. Already put GenMar handlebar risers on it so I could ride it without major pain. I currently own 5 street bikes, one dirt bike, and one street legal quad. I have over 400,000 street miles, no accidents. I used to race MX when I was much younger, and got banged up pretty bad several times, to the point where I had to give it up. Jerry.

I never did the MX scene but I did have a coupkle of dirt bikes I rode for fun.
My story is similar except I started at 12 with a little Honda 70 MiniTrail (10, if you count a Ruttman Toad mini-bike). My first road bike was a '61 Benelli (Ward's Riverside) that I got well used. Then I got a used Kaw 400, traded that for a CB350. Most of my (street) riding buddies were in the Brit Bike crowd so I picked up the XS1B, put a BUB exhaust on then put Jap repop Lucas style sigals and tail light on it, took off the nameplates, filled in the spot where they went and painted it up like a Tiger 500. With the fake Ceriani front end, it could pass for a Triumph at 30 mph. Of course, with that crowd I never used the electric start.

I have owned one British bike, a '66 Triumph Bonneville about 20 years ago. It was in great shape for what it was, the Lucas electrics and Amal carbs sucked, but these days you can get modern replacements. It's the one bike I really regret selling. I almost bought a new Kawasaki W650, but the price was just too high. I don't like the looks of the newer Triumph Bonnevilles, but I do like the Thruxton. Again, just too expensive.

About your user name, are you a car guy too? Jerry.

112,567. Very few really, considering it's age. I have done four trips on it but they were minor, like 400 or 500 miles away

I know what you mean about the Thruxton!
Really pretty but way too much money.
