Hi everyone,
just got a 125 ca Rebel!! my honda c70 died the other day and i thought it was time for a real bike. after looking at thousands of bikes on ebay i knew the rebel was for me. should be ready to ride tonight i.e. tax, mot ins.
I have already took it for a spin and it is indeed my cup of tea.
however i have found it only reached 50mph :(
So i found your site and searched through a few threads to determine i need to do the following things:
Clean/ Replace Air Filter
Clean Carb
Check/adjust vale clearances
Check the timing Chain
Check/ Replace CDI

I have already :
changed the oil
Changed the spark plugs
fiddled with the carb

when i checked the new spark plugs after running i noticed one was almost white very dry, the other one on the gear side was black. would this indicate a certain problem?
Also it cuts out if the throttle is jerked back hard, if you gentley increse the throttle it revs up good.????
I have already learned so much from this forum and its great members ;) i hope i can learn more and be able to help others in the future.

Carl.

The plugs should be more or less the same color since there is only one carb. White plug indicates leanness, and black is usually rich (or oil fouling) Hard to diagnose without more info. Is the compression the same on both cylinders? I would check the valve clearances immediately to rule out valve problems.

thanks Gyro, if there completely different i will be able to tell. so me mates just foned to say the fork oil seals didnt come and so no mot today :( will give me chance to clean the carb and do the valves tonight instead of riding it as is all night. i will update on any performance increasing measures that work.

welcome to the forum its always nice to have another member from England's green and pleasant land

thanks for the welcomes chaps,
update: carb cleaned and fiddled has stop it dying on a hard throttle but it has to tick over quite high. im thinking its definately vale clearances so will have a look at some vids today whilst on the comp then do them tonight.
I tried taking the HT caps off one side at a time to see if either side was running different, they were both the same(was able to rev high and ticked over at half new rev speed.), it seems the cdis maybe ok?, but i didnt try it under load where the problems arise i.e. 50mph. hopefully its the valve clearances and not the timing itself.

Welcome aboard!

Refresh my memory...is Warwicikshire home to that tourist trap castle boasting the world's largest trebuchet?

OK valves set to 4 thous(0.004) and it goes a lot better :) straight up to 50 mph a fiddle with the carb and i was getting 55 mph running out of road so im saying an increase of at least 6 mph and much better/ quicker upto 50 mph. the new 14 tooth front sprocket and fork oil seals have arrived :) these will befitted tonight, hopefully the sprocket will make the top end 60 +. Does anyone live in the uk and know of a shop that stocks the parts? im fed up of waiting for the post man.

Update: Changed the sprocket to a 14t (13t standard) and ran out of road before i could get it up to 55mph, it flys upto 50mph maybe a bit slower than before but im still in 3rd!! in 4th it now has slower acceleration (but im already doing 50) got it upto 53 ish when the revs were picking up and ran out of road :( before testing the fork oil seals were changed and me mates phoned to say it passed the MOT this morning :) when i finish work ill give it a proper test run on some real roads see how its performing before i decide on keeping the sprocket change., if its not still raining :(

Update: Due to a little bit of thunder and lightning and a 4 year olds birthday party with bouncy castle, i only got out on a short run last night when it stopped raining in the dusk/dark. Im convinced the bike is restricted, i didnt get into 5th, it gets up to 50 then stops pulling, i reckon i only got over 50 the other night because i was giving it death in 4th the gear i achieved 55 mph in. im now giving it death (the revs are high until there is no more discernible increase in speed) in 3rd all the way upto 50 and then there is no death to be had in 4th!!. if i slip the clutch (give it a little squeeze with the throttle still wide open) there is a sharp increase in speed followed by a little bump forward but the revs just go back. the speed dosent increase. im starting to suspect the timing may be out.

All in all though im loving the bike, the way it corners, the purr of the engine. it is GREAT.

The timing is not adjustable on the rebel is fixed and advance is controlled by the cdi box

It sounds like the 125 is a decent bike and easy to work on. I purchased a Rebel recently and the positive side, is that these bikes are air cooled. I'm also will be doing a lot work myself.
Once the tag/license plate is on it for legal street purpose, I will be looking into mild mod's. And looking into apparel stuff and draw up custom t-shirts as well. I wish there would be more aftermarket performance stuff for this model.

wjmrty : i think i mean the cam chain timing, i read a post somewhere where it was one tooth out.
flitecontrol : i dont think its the clutch as the revs just aint picking up in 4th. when i dip the clutch theres a whole lot of revs there but they dont stay and the bike dosent reach the high revs in the high gears. it pulls perfectly in third from slow up a hill with no clutch slipping.
03GeoReb : yeah there is very little in the way of rebel specific mod parts.
ive found a high performance cdi for a NSR125 but not sure if itll work/make a difference.

I have now seen everything: a Brit slaughtering the Queen's English with a word that simply ain't a word.

Along with the double negative "ain't got no" which means they must have something. When I ask what they have, I get blank stares. Goes right over the tops of their semiliterate heads. :banghead: :nonono:
