If the engine is running fast but the bike isn't responding, I would suspect clutch problems. If the engine won't rev up, I would check/suspect in this order 1. dirty carb, 2. plugs/wires (spark).

If you changed the oil with energy conserving oil, then there's your problem.

It can take 1,000 miles or more with energy conserving oil to cause the clutch to slip. Don't ask how I know this.

anyone have an idea of why this is happening?
slipping/bad clutch. it has been asked if you had changed the oil? If so are you sure you did not use energy conserving oil.

If you are sure you did not, then it is a really good bet the clutch plates have gone south and need replacement.

If you did use EC oil, you might be able to flush it out, but I would suspect that you have already 'burned' the plates with the EC oil which is going to need new clutch plates.

Changing clutch plates is not a hard thing to do. Get yourself a good manual. (Clymers is so-so. Honda Common Service Manual is better) Ask questions here. CPHAMOO

just found out the the clutch is problem. i went riding a bit after work, and i noticed when i would let go of the clutch and gave it gas RIGHT before itd stall, the bike ran perfectly.

unfortunately, it somehow got completely messed up (i think a screw fell out) so it wouldnt run. had to walk the bike like four blocks to my house at 2AM.

anyway, im pretty much new to motorcycles so with a manual, you think it would it be ok for me to try fixing it myself? i dont wanna make it worse lol. i was actually thinking of having someone fix it for me but i think itll cost me a bit.

Clymer also has a service manual: CLYMER HONDA CMX250C CMX250CD CMX REBEL SERVICE MANUAL: eBay Motors (item 370356089171 end time Jul-24-10 16:58:43 PDT)

You may want to order a new lock nut that holds the clutch on. IIRC, around $3.50 from my local dealership. Grind or file the old locking tab/skirt off and remove with an old screwdriver and hammer. Remember to soak the new clutch plates in oil for a few hours before installing. Pretty simple, and both manuals have pictures.
