Can't win them all

Since today and tomorrow I'm working nights, due to a paint job. I went to the DMV today and FAILED the writen test. I couldn't believe it. I'll try again tomorrow. If for some reason I fail again tomorrow it will be a while for the next time I can take time off. The questions on the MSF course/web site are very different. They told me they were aout of booklets and to check the MSF web site, it is very different. Let's see what happens tomorrow.

FWIW, as a newbie, I took it without having a booklet or studing anything online. I mean, I've been driving over 40 years; how difficult can it be? Turns out, a lot. Failed it, got the booklet, studied it and passed.

I'm wondering if you couldn't just go on line and check the state website. They may have the manual there.

Good Luck.

When I first got my license, back in 1975, there was no MSF. I got the book from MVD, studied it, and passed the written 100%. At that time, there was also no real skills test, you had to ride a few circles around the parking lot, while the MVD person watched you, then come to a controlled stop right in front of them. That was it. I later took boyh the beginners and experienced MSF courses, after I had been riding on the street for over 10 years, and did just fine. The instructor at the beginners course knew I was an experienced rider, but I got a free certificate to take the class when I bought a new bike, so I figured, why not? IMO, by far the best way to get your license id to take the MSF class. It is fun, you learn a lot of stuff you will need to know to avoid getting killed during your first few months of riding, and there is a lot less pressure than just taking the test.

While at the MVD for other reasons, I have watched a lot of people take the skills test and fail. I specifically remember one guy on a custom Harley who dropped his bike during the test, picked it up, and roared off. This guy had probably been riding for years without a motorcycle license. Jerry.

Thanks flight I don't feel so lonely now. I thought something like this could only happen to me. But I guess not.

They told me they dodn't have one on paper, and their web site didn't show one. I just checked and , no theres nothing on MS Department of Safety website. They told me to study on the MSF, that the questions are based on that one. I'll try again today and see what happens. If I fail it twice I'm not going to feel very smart.

If I fail the written today it's not going to be years but weeks that I'll ride without an endorsement. My MSF instructor told me to practice every day for at least 15 mins...

The written test for a motorcycle endorsement here has very little to do with how to ride a motorcycle, its 95% about laws, rules, and regulations. My youngest daughter recently got her drivers license, and while there, I read through the 25 page booklet for the motorcycle test. It was basically a joke. Not only that, but you can now pass just the written test, and get a 6 month permit to ride a motorcycle, on the street, even if you've never been on a motorcycle before. There are a couple of restrictions, like no night riding, and you have to stay within a certain distance of where you live, but what really surprised me was that there was no size limit on the motorcycle. You could pass a 25 question written test on motorcycle laws, then go out and legally ride a Hayabusa on the street. Scary. Jerry.
