1st Motorcycle, 2009 Rebel

Hello,

Just recently bought my first Bike and decided to go with the 2009 Rebel. Did a great deal of research and feel I made the right decision. I bought it used through consignment at the local shop, Sport's City Cyclery in Great Falls, MT. The only difference in the new 2009 and the used 2009 was about 400 miles and $1200.

I completed a motorcycle safety course as I am Active Duty Air Force and require it to ride, but feel I also learned a great deal about motorcycles in the class as well.

If you have any advice out there, feel free to shoot it my direction. I always welcome it from people who know.

Welcome, macbff. I also ride an '09, and I agree that you have a fine bike. The MSF course is a great resource even if it wasn't required. I also recommend a book called 'Proficient Motorcycling' by David Hough. I learn something new about riding every time I start 'er up. Do you have any fun roads to ride in your part of Montana?

I am currently stationed now at Malmstrom AFB. We are right on the outskirts of Great Falls. I noticed that you are in Lancaster Co, Pa. I grew up in Lancaster city and left for the military from Ephrata. Where are you at?

We do have some awfully fun roads to ride on in Montana. Just have to get the dang snow to stop and the wind to take a break from blowing at 50 mph gusts. Still riding, but don't want to do the "fun" roads in high gusts.

Thanks all for the welcome, I haven't been riding all that long as of yet, but I do know that I love getting on the Rebel and starting it up, and then taking off on it. It is a fun bike, and I do feel I made a good choice with the purchase.

i look forward to more communications and tips if you have them. I am constantly reading the forums for mods or just plain ole good ideas.

Welcome Shawn, at 600 miles your valves are gonna need adjusting. It's an easy procedure for the Reb, and it's documented quite well in the maintenance section of this forum, along with pics!

My engine didn't feel broken in for the first 1,500 miles. The clutch seemed to grip too easy and not give enough slip. Even the safety course instructors cut the Rebel riders a bit of slack on the clutch control excercises.

I recommend changing the oil every 2,000 miles instead of Honda's 4,000. Seems everyone has difficultly shifting by the time the oil approaches the 4,000 mark.

I recommend you install a magnetic oil drain plug becouse there is no oil filter to change.

Last thing I recommend is a fuel filter...one of these days I'll have one.

Welcome. Nice bike. I have a red '04 that I bought in showroom condition with 4000 miles for $1800. I've done some customizing since I bought it, but so far nothing irreversible. If you fit on it, the Rebel can't be beat. You can ride it across town or across the country. I didn't fit, and had to fabricate a way to move the pegs and foot controls 4" forward. I fit fine now, and have taken several 300-400 mile rides on it.


Service is a piece of cake on the Rebel. If you are the least bit mechanically inclined, learn to do it yourself. Most dealers will rip you off big time. Jerry.

Very nice bike. That blue looks great! I think the 400 mile/$1,200 dollar trade off was a great deal!

IMO it was a great deal if the bike is ok. I have seen motorcycles destroyed in only a few miles by new riders, without ever crashing. I looked at a brand new dirtbike once, bought by and ridden (about half a mile) by a new rider. It came with a box of broken engine parts. Somehow, this guy had gotten it up to a fairly high speed in top gear, pulled in the clutch, downshifted all the way down to first, and let the clutch out. It scattered the engine and transmission all over the place, even bent the crankshaft and rod.


Choices in the 250 beginner class are fairly limited, you have the Rebel, the V-Star 250, and the Suzuki GZ250. Of those, I prefer the Rebel. There are so many things you can do to it that would not be nearly as easy with the others. But. Then there is the Suzuki TU250. Even though I love my Rebel, the TU250 would be my hands down choice if not for the fuel injection and insane price. You can get deals on new Rebels, but dealers won't budge on the $4000 MSRP of the Suzuki, and usually want several hundred more $$$ on top of that in bogus charges. Apparently they are highly sought after and hard to come by. Also, they are not sold in CA, for some strange reason. Jerry.
