Covering your seat

Recovering your seat 101 - el cheapo way!

First remove the seat!

Remove the old clips

We are going to remove the whole foam and vinyl cover to keep it

in case you want to go back!

In the case of the older Rebels 85 -87 the seat pan has a huge dip

which I hate, the newer ones don't have it get a good quality high O mean high density foam.

If you buy el cheapo foam from Walmart, you are going to seat on top of the pan! It got to be a hard high density!

Mark it with a magic marker.

Cut it with a sharp knife

I want to reduce the huge dip on the seat pan, spray some 3m spray glue.

Spray some more glue and place the foam template.

Place the vinyl upside down on top of the seat, and in the front

pick up the slack and mark.

Do the same for the 2 rear corners

this slack is to avoid having to twist the vinyl.. However if you don't have the talent to

use a sewing machine, then just place the vinyl on top and twist at the end and at the front

However for a better look....continue. Now tell your wife to go to the mall, grab her machine, of course buy some haevy duty thread, or ask her to do this 3 seams. The 2 back and the one in the front

Now lets use some 1/4 inch foam for roundness

Place the vinyl on top

Grab your stapling gun and star shooting some clips streching the vinyl around.

VIOLA A NEW SEAT!

NOTE NOW THE DIFFERENCE IN THE DIP OF THE SEAT

Now let replace the broken rubber parts under the to avoid vibration

grab a piece of 5/8 heater hose, glue with epoxy glue and

drill and insert 2 small screws one on each end

Install on the bike! note that this one is lower than the back seat, I did this on purpose

since I have a gel pad also.

Now go ride, and buy me some Puertorican Rum!

Way to go & thanx for sharing that Tech Tip, chemanuel!

It also helps others to see that there's a lot of mods that can be done without having to pay someone else to do it. You just saved at LEAST $50 right there. Plus you've gained the self-gratification of knowing that you did it yourself.

I used to get old vintage chopper seats reupholstered at auto upholstery shops. Also had the 250 Rebel seats lowered & reupholtstered professionally. Cheapest I ever found that kind of work done for was $40 years ago.....then they bumped it up to $50 per item (still relatively inexpensive). Then they made the mistake of mis-quoting the prices on me, which kinda ticked me off as I'd brought in a multiple order gig for 'em (2 solo seats, 1 p-pad) & was expecting a discount, not a mis-quote, LOL! Never went back & have since been doing my own, so in essence they actually did me a favor! LMAO!

Again, GREAT job!

Ride Safe......
