Hey guys,

Just got me my 2001 Rebel and loving it. I took off the airbox side cover though, and realised how restricting that plastic plate looked. It seems like there's basically no way for air to get in there... atleast at a steady pace.

Has anyone done a mod to do a Free Ram Air thing? Like, would cutting a couple holes be alright? Or wonder if it would even help really.

I think that this is a good idea but, correct me if I am wrong, I think major rejetting would be required. A tunnel sticking out with a cone filter would be awesome.

I believe some folks have drilled holes thru the side of the inner plastic airbox, but not sure if they had to re-jet or not.

On the '85, I removed the airbox entirely & used the stock breather hose to install a UniFlow foam filter, looked pretty trick. Later re-mounted the chrome outer cover for aesthetics only. This was also while running straight pipes (all EPA gear gone) & thankfully, on the '85, no re-jetting was required.

jkersh's idea of losing the airbox & running a ram air filter on the side would look righteous! You'd probably want to open up the pipes as well & you'd definitely be looking at a re-jetting on the '01 ('85, '86 & '87 requiring no re-jet, subsequent years requiring re-jet after pipe/airbox mods)

Yeah, I think it might help her out a bit. I mean, that box is literally a box! No real way for air to get in hardly. Didn't think about the jetting though... used to EFI on my V8.

It may not require a re-jetting though, seeing as how that much more airflow would suck that much more fuel in with it right?

I'm with you.......I like to let the bikes "breath" easier.

Another example: On the 450 Reb, I'm running straight pipes, but have kept the stock airbox intact. No re-jet required. If I lost the airbox, I'd have to re-jet. So by that logic, if you drilled holes in the airbox, but kept the pipes stock, you might not have to re-jet.

450 Reb........pipe alteration, no airbox alteration, no re-jet.
If both pipe & airbox alteration, re-jet required.
250 Reb........airbox alteration, no pipe alteration, no re-jet.
If both pipe & airbox alteration, re-jet required.

If others disagree, PLEASE chime in as I don't want to steer Kyle wrong.

With a ventilated airbox, it should definitely pull in more airflow. My guess is that it'd only be able to pull fuel from "already available" fuel as per the existing jetting, yes ?

the wifeys 250 had:

airbox mod (and? )
right side exhaust (mac)
shimmed carb needle (rather than rejet)

The average clocked speed over 10 runs was 93 mph, its good to be buddies with second in command at the local S.O.

Thats about tops for a rebel, and that was no windshield, no bags, laying on the tank, light light wind and variable, 8/10's +/- straight road and a 1% unfavorable grade.

Thanks for the info guys! Yeah, didn't think about the jet size being physically too small. I would think though at anything under WOT, the fuel could flow through enough to keep up with the added air... just once its wound out at redline, then the fuel would lean out without a larger jet, right?

That's crazy too, 93MPH?! For so little mods done, very impressive. Once I replace my front tire, I could be up for some highway driving...

I'm no carb expert, but you may very well be right on about the jetting, Kyle, provided there wasn't any pipe alterations done.

Also agree on the 93 mph Rebel. That's COOKING! There's some bigger dogs that can't match that

There is an air intake for that box...it is located under the seat!



That roundish, square thingy with an opening near the rear fender..
