Angry Won't crank and won't idle with side stand down

1999 rebel 250.Just went to pick up from shop. Bike will not crank with side stand down and will not idle with side stand down. Mech said this is normall. I have never had to have stand up to start before. And I can't believe the bike won't idle in netral with stand down. I have always let the bike warm up with the stand down. Whats up is this shop nuts or did he have it in gear? They still have the bike for other things, so I have not been able to check it out more myself.

My 250 Night Hawk will start and run with the stand down in neutral. Put it in gear with the stand down it dies. I think the rebel is suppose to be the same.
With that it sounds like you have a bad stand switch.

It should only crank with the side stand down if it's in neutral. The safety switch prevents it from cranking in gear.

I'm keepin' all the left over parts. I'm gonna use 'em to build another bike!

Does the neutral light work?
If it does that rules out the neutral safety.
If it don't then it will think the bike is in gear.

Garage
I'd say neutral safety but if the neutral light works, as noted, it could be the clutch switch or clutch diode.

Thank You, I will check in out when I get the bike back. Maybe the bike was not in neutral? The bike should idle with the stand down and in Neutral, right?

Yes your bike should run in neutral as the stand is down. If not you should make sure your clutch switch is working. You stand has a switch to that you might want to check too.

Won't crank and won't idle with side stand down

Most bikes have a safety switch that's on the side stand. If you lower it down, and your in gear it will shut off. This is so you can't take off with the stand down. It came in handy one day on my BMW. This is a nice feature, because one day my grandfathers old BMW did not have it and I took off and the stand was not all the way up. This is easy to fix just lightly hit it with your foot and it should fully raise up.

Like Buickguy said, check the switch. One of our Guzzi's is famous for the safety switch working intermittently.

Be glad you don't have a 1997 BMW R850. It WON'T run with the side stand down, neutral or not. Gots to have it on the center stand to warm up. PITA.
