Will Different Engines Fit?

Hey guys im new to the board and had a strange question to some. Im looking into getting a rebel and wanted to build it into a bobber. I want to know if it would be possible to put a bigger enigine like a 600cc from a honda 600cbr? I know there are two years that came with a 450cc motor but i didnt know if i could put a newer or bigger motor to the frame saftely? Thanks for all the help.

Welcome to the forum. The 250 and 450 Rebel have different frames. This subject has come up before and IIRC, the issue was raised that the 250 frame probably wasn't designed for a much heavier engine. So if you find a larger motor that fit, you might have to modify/rebuild the frame for it to be safe. Ditto for the 450.

Not saying it can't be done, but you need to know what you're doing to do it safely.

On the plus side, if you have a burning desire for a smaller engine, the swap down to a 125 isn't too bad!

I think from an engineering stand point the real problem with the Rebel frame is it's ability to handle the torque of a larger engine. A 250 engine producing 18hp at WOT doesn't produce a lot of torque. Plus the engine is lighter, but by how much that would really matter is out of my scope. If a person were to weld up a dual downtube with cross members, the twist potential would be greatly reduced. There are others on the board that might offer their opinion to my thoughts...

Jacks shop stuffed a 750 motor into a 450 frame along with a 350 4 cylinder motor into a 250 frame so it can be done with enough work and money.
