Starts Then Stalls, Starts Then Stalls...
That is the problem i have been having and i was wondering if anyone here has encountered the same problem or had an idea of what i may be doing wrong. Every time i try to start it up the engine fires right up then trails off a few seconds later and stalls.
i've changed the oil, plugs, tried with choke on and off, charged the battery, and still the same results. when i give the throttle a twist before starting it starts stronger but still sputters out in about the same amount of time. The guy i bought it from rode the bike to my place from over an hour away and it was running great. He turned it off and started it back up about 10 minutes later no problem. I know it was warm then, but if that were the problem i was thinking choke would be the issue.
any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys.

so i have been messing with it more. checked the SE valve looks fine. adjusted the throttle stop a bit with mixed results. it seems i can get the bike running if i start it with some choke and giving it a little bit of gas, but its really touchy. if i try to rev it or let off throttle it dies.
i'm pretty stumped. Contemplating cleaning the carb, but since i know it was running when i got it i think i might just be making a dumb beginner mistake (this is my first bike BTW).

Is the petcock turned on?
Maybe a bit of crud got stuck in the sediment bowl of the petcock.
Check for fuel flow. Turn off the petcock then Pull the line off the carb and turn on the petcock to see if fuel flows from the tank. Catch the fuel in a glass jar.
If that is good, put the fuel line back on and see if fuel comes out of the carb bowl drain. If that is all good, then it may be time for a carb cleaning.

hey thanks for the advice. petcock is definitely on, i definitely have gas too, that i don't think is old. i am pretty sure fuel is getting to the carb because when it starts (for the few seconds it runs) the throttle is definitely working.
i will check for flow like you said though just to be sure. then unless i get some more ideas i will be cleaning the carb.
the only thing that bothers me about that is it was running strong the day i got it so i don't know how terrible the carb could be. just makes me feel like i am overlooking something obvious.

Engine dies at idle
Greetings Burlymugg,
Try this procedure and see if the engine will run at higher rpm's
Rotate throttle from off to 1/4 throttle for 6 times.
Engage the SEV full on.
With left thumb on starter button, and right hand on the throttle, ready to turn the throttle to 1/2 position.
Press the starter button, when the starter engages, start turning the throttle to 1/2 position.
If engine will run at higher rpm, start disengaging the SEV.
If you can keep the engine running at higher rpm, but it dies when throttle is returned to idle.
You have a restriction in idle, pilot, SEV and possible the main jet circuits.

hey, tried this out. it got me the same results as before except it was running at a higher RPM before stalling.
i was able to get it to idle for like 30 seconds with the choke on and turning the throttle stop to a higher idle speed. i thought maybe that would be it and it just had to warm up but i couldn't replicate those results. i am thinking its carb cleaning time for me, but if anyone has any other ideas of something i may be missing please tell.

Do you have an inline filter installed? Something might have gotten loose and made its way into the carb. You could try Sea Foam before tearing into it, but if it's rust, Sea Foam won't help. Get a flashlight and mirror when the tank is empty and see if there is any rust in the back of the tank.

i do have an inline filter installed. came on the bike though so i don't know how long its been on there.
my problem with the sea foam is since i can't really get the thing running how am i going to get it to run thru the carb?
either way i just picked up this carb kit, hopefully i wont need it, but its beginning to look that way.

Well, you can drain the carb (use bowl drain screw) into a clear container to see if anything comes out, and then refill it with straight Sea Foam. Then drain the Sea Foam. But you may still wind up having to clean it.
Where did you get the carb kit?
