If I'm not mistaken you actually can't adjust the timing on these rebels. The best you can do is adjust the valve clearance. These rebels use a Capacitor Discharge Ignition (CDI) system, with a Pulse Generator. This system causes both plugs to fire at the same time even though only one piston is a top dead center. You can check to see if your timing is off, but there is no way to adjust it. If it's off you have to check and replace one or both units. It's all in my Clymer.

Doing a forum searh for valve clearance will get you this thread FAQ: Valve Adjustment
From the pic there, You can put the timing marks in the right place.
Be sure to have the pistons down before bringing the cam into position so that you don't bend a valve. Line up the timing marks like for a valve clearance adjust. Of course, you will also have to set the valve clearance anyway.
Zeprider also has an excellent video on setting valve clearance that shows how the timing marks need to be set for clearance adjust.

Remember, the cam turns 1/2 the speed of the crank. If you lined up your marks and it still won't start remove the cam chain and spin the cam 360 degrees, put your chain back on. I have never had the head off a Rebel so I can't give you a step by step how to. Get a manual or find it on line. I do not know if the Rebels piston will hit the valves or not if its 360 out of time, so its best to get a manual.

If I'm reading this right, you had the timing chain off, and need to know how to line everything up to put it back on?

wouldn't that be 180 degrees?

Don't know for sure Cagie. I can be wrong, just ask my wife. If it is off 360 its 1 full revolution out of time. If the cam turns 1/2 the speed of the crank it would have to be on the mark every 360 degrees when the crank hits its mark every 720 degrees. I had a 1980 Chevy Chevette. Every 30,000 miles the cam belt went. The easy way was a 30 min. job. If it didn't start spin the cam 1 full rotation and it started. It was not a zero clearance engine so I didn't worry about valves hitting pistons. At 180 off will the timing marks line up or do you need a full revolution (360) for it to line up?

Turn crank 180, leave cam alone. This will put them back in sinc.

180 is 1/2 a revolution. Will the timing marks line up every 720?
