Times don't always change for the better.......

I rarely do business with dealerships unless there's no other choice and even then, it'd only be to buy parts that I can't find either online or at a local indie shop. Established indie shops are usually excellent sources for ordering parts or asking tech questions, but they're slowly disappearing and that's a sad reality.

Have had experiences with 3 different dealerships where if the person behind the parts counter couldn't find it on their computer, then they were clueless. Even had one guy looking thru his aftermarket catalog and I literally had to point to the part on the page for him.

I hadn't known about the difference in jet sizing between Mikuni and Keihin until you posted it last night. Have always gone on the rule of thumb that the larger the #, the fatter the jet. But I agree that people who actually sell parts should be savvy enough to train their employees to avoid exactly what you've just gone thru.......

Yo, Jerry.......been meaning to ask you about this part:

"When motorcycle emissions testing goes away here, I have a like new non CV flat slide Mikuni carb from an XR250 that I intend to try on the Rebel. I have hated CV carbs since I first saw one. EPA meddling again. Jerry."

Is this wishful thinking or are they really going to end emissions testing for motorcycles ? Haven't heard anything, but sure hope it's true. If it is, would it only be for your County or would it be state wide ?

Motorcycle emissions testing in Tucson ended about 3 years ago. Maricopa county is the only county in the entire country that still has it, and it is expected to end by the end of July. I check this site http://www.azdeq.gov/environ/air/vei/motor.html every couple of days, and am planning on having a big party (or at least celebrating) when I find out that it is finally over. We have suffered from this sham for over 30 years. It will be a great day indeed when all motorcyclists are finally free from it. Jerry.

Well yesterday I put in a #38 slow (pilot jet), and a #138 main jet, both Keihin, and it runs almost perfectly. I took it out for a ride, and for the the first time since I got the bike, I have the full range of throttle baby! I can actually go WOT without any sputtering along the way. Although when riding, it felt like the slow jet could be bigger, due to a slight delay in throttle responce. It seemed like it was about to sputter in the first 1/4 throttle but it wouldn't. I pulled out the plugs and it appears that I'm lean again, which is actually nice to see at this point.. Especially considering that I had a #145 Mikuni main jet in there, which is the equivalent to a #170 Keihin. I will be fine tuning it over the next couple of weeks, by switching one jet at a time, until I get it perfect. I'll start tomorrow by putting the #40 slow jet back in and keeping the #138 main, and going from there. It shouldn't be long now, I'm close to getting it right, I can feel it!

hey man thanks a ton for the updates. I am definitely gonna rip the airbox out of my bike and install a pod filter so knowing the jets that worked perfectly for you will definitely make my life a lot easier.

EXCELLENT! If the #40/#138 doesn't nail it down, you might try #40/#135 (please refer to my 1st reply in the thread explaining the theory I'm going on)......but you're definitely close and that's great! Please keep us posted........you're almost there!

No problem man. This forum has been an invaluable tool for me and the least I can do is post my trials and tribulations to help others. Keep in mind though that there are many different factors, and what works for me may not work for you. It is a trial and error process that takes time to get it right, but it may give you a good starting point at the very least.

Unfortunately I got called into work yesterday so I will have to wait until friday to work on the carb, but I will definitely keep you posted. I really think the #40/#138 is gonna be the ticket.
