Angry Petcock: Which direction is which?

It seems I can't read a simple owners manual. Is the tang up for on, level to the ground for off and down for reserve on the petcock?('87 450 Rebel) This is the 2nd #&XX@!!! time I've ran out of gas!

On mine it's on when it's facing to the ground, off when level to the bike and reserve when its facing the sky.

I dont know the 450, but you can probably read "On/OFF/PRI on your petcock. Check it out.

I checked the petcock 1st thing. I just checked the owners manual, and I was doing just the opposite. I've been running on reserve this whole time, soooo when it's empty, It's EMPTY! Boy do I feel stupid! Anybody else in this rocket science club?

I keep forgetting to turn it on. When I first got the bike, I only turned it off when it was going to be parked all day or all night, so I didn't get in the habit of turning it on every time I get on. I've since started tuning it off every time I dismount, but for some reason I don't always remember to turn it on. Switching to reserve on the highway is no big deal. Turning it on when I'm shifting from second to third is another matter!

I just leave mine in the on position all the time. With the vacuum needed to open it to allow fuel to go to the carbs. I don't bother with it.

Ride safe

Does the 450 have a vacuum activated petcock? I know the 250 Rebel is gravity fed.

On my '85 250, down is reserve, flat is off, and up is on.
