Permanently mounting throw-over saddlebags

I have a set of Chase Harper Dual Sport soft bags (still sell for $170 at motorcycle superstore) and the center area (the "yoke"??) where the two bags velcro together on the passenger seat area is a little messed up (my friend cut through them).

But they are free and they look pretty good otherwise but I cant get over the use of straps to keep them on and the damaged center area being exposed so I figured I could cut the straps off and along with the cobra support bars, they would be fine.

Is there anything I should do or not do? I was just going to shorten the center section a bit them put them on and try to re-install the seat(s) over them.

I like the nylon style bags and don't want to do a signal relocation and do not particularly like the leather max and willie or river road lether bags that everyone seems to have.

I have a set of OSi soft bags very similar to what you have. While I use mine as throw over bags what you want to do is possible. The front straps should just tuck in.
You should be able to remove your seat and put the yoke across the fend then reinstall the seats. I do that on the Virago (one piece seat that open with a key lock)
You will want to shorten up/adjust the yoke so the bags don't hit the exhaust.
I'd try to find a way to sew up the section that was cut through. Maybe a friend with a sewing machine could help out.
I've never used any supports since my bags sit high enough to rest on the fender rails.

Here I have a pic of the OSi bags just thrown over the saddle. Note the forward strap the routes over the shock mount to hold on the passenger footpeg.
Easy on, easy off. Great for trips where staying in a motel or wanting to bring your bags in to a tent while camping.

Another option that a few people consider is to use the edge brackets to mount the bags. This allows you to remove them when you want, but key locked on so they don't walk away. You might need to put a piece of plastic or other rigid material onthe bags to make them stiff enough to work.

I had done this with a set of leather bags before I got a set of hard bags that I have now. IMO it looks so much cleaner not having any straps across the fender (that flop around). The rigid mount keeps it away from the swingarm and doesn't move.

In this pic, I had removed the seat and tucked in the forward strap. Note the passenger peg is now in the folded posittion and there is no need to relocate signals. With the height the bags are now set at, mine have no need of extra support.

One thing, however. I just noticed that when putting the bags on under the seat, I mounted them backwards! That's what I get for being in a hurry!
It shouldn't affect the mount however.

Your Chase Harper bags should be able to mount in a similar fasion
You may have to put a small hole in your yoke to accomodate the bolts for the saddle, paticularly the front saddle.
Be advised that mounting them won't stop content theft. The bags still won't lock and can be easily unzipped.

Instead of permanently mounting the bags, I use tie wraps to keep them in place at all times, and if I have to remove them for a reason, just snip them and take em off.

Cagie, I'll take some Edge bracket info! Can they be used with a sissy bar, luggage rack, and saddlebag support brackets?
