Oldie with NO spark

Hello, got a '79 Twinstar. Turns over but getting no spark to the plugs. I'm not real mechanical and broke so I find myslef in a bind. Is there something real easy i can look for? I got a little "pokey" electric tester but didn't help (operator error I'm sure). I checked the fuse off the distributor or something that somebody mentioned. Any help would be awsome.

In looking at the wiring diagram in the Clymers:
#1 the engine kill switch has corrosion preventing the contacts from closing
#2 bad condenser
#3 bad ignition coil
#4 contact breaker, I'm not sure what this is
#5 neutral switch

I don't have a lot of faith in thier wiring diagrams. They have the Rebel diagram wrong in my version.

Your not going to see any reliable voltage readings when checking for a spark. In fact, you might even ruin your volt meter!

It sure is! I knew it from my Buick service manual. They call them breaker points.

Points!!! Grab a thin file (your wifes nailfile will work...), remove the points, hold 'em open and file them flat!

When resetting them, set them to open 1/32" or so! There will be an air gap pn the offset ring on the crankshaft as it turns and pushes the points open. Leave the cover off, put the timing in the middle, close the choke and kick away!!!

It'll run like crap until the points clear themselves of the shavings! Watch the points open and close from idle to redline. They should open no more the 1/32" all the way through the rpm range, if they open more at lower rpms the bike will have a dead zone in the powerband!

I tend to adjust the timing ahead.

POINTS! people still run those? I would sand them with 400 grit sandpaper then clean them with a buisness card and set them at .025 to start with and adjust from there.

The point gap's specified 0.012"-0.016"
Spark plug gap is 0.024"-0.028"

I just finished installing the new points. There was quite a bit of wear on them. Time to take her for a rip!
