Extended Forks

Anyone have extended forks on their bike? Do you have any pictures of it?

I think this looks pretty cool, how do you go about doing this to your bike? Where did you get your forks?

I Found these on Jacks...what is your opinion?

While I don't have extended forks, Jack has good stuff and good service.

Are you planning on dropping the rear end to keep the geometry? How much are you wanting to extend? Do yourself a favor and do a search, Shadow Shack has some words of wisdom about extendning/chopping.

^ yes, several, but there is more than just slapping on some longer forks if you want a safe ride.

Longer forks will mandate either mods to your frame or at the very minimum some rear lowering. Now an extra one or two inches of fork length won't mandate anything, but your resulting CofG will be higher than what you're used to. Still, offsetting that by dropping the same inch or two off the tail will offer a much nicer feeling ride...on the other hand if you merely add some 6" over forks onto a stock bike with no other mods, you're going to be riding around in the constant "wheelie" stance and have some really funky feeling handling issues when it comes time to turn the bike away from a straight line.

Chop To It!!

(the pics on that page were lost when the site moved, I might be able to repost them here if you want).

Anyways, with all that in mind here's my Rebel with 44º rake in the frame (stock frame rake is 30º) and an inch of lowering on ther ear suspension to support 7" over forks:

Same bike, next to a VT600 Shadow that received parallel treatments

Be careful, many a bike has snapped off at the neck because of extended forks. It puts a lot more torque on that area because the forks are now like a longer lever, and more horizontal than down.

Maybe if the welder didn't have a clue what he was doing when modifying the frame, that claim might be feasible. The thing is, fork manufacturers keep the over-stock lengths to a minimum for a variety of reasons, you'll search long and hard for a hydraulic fork tube that is more than 10" over. Bottom line here is the fork will fail long before the frame will. If you need further proof of that, go look at some wrecked bikes that plowed head on into something and note how the forks collapse into the frame --- you'll find far more bent forks than you will bent forks AND wrecked steering heads.

Unfortunately, you're both right. There are a lot more welders than there are competent welders. Welding on a frame is something that should only be done by a competent, experienced welder. It's not the place to teach yourself how to weld.

Shack, always meant to ask; the tubes on the Rebel, I assume they are 33mm, are the walls thicker? I mean 33mm is flimsy by itself, then to stretch it out a by over half a foot...
