Engine Ticking = Valve Adjustment
I've been hearing a ticking noise comming from the right cylinder on my '85 250, and from what I understand it means that I need to adjust my valve clearance, and timing. It doesn't seem to be all that difficult, but since I've never done this before I was looking for any tips or advice on doing this. Also do I need to get a timing light that displays the rpms to do this properly?

If I'm not mistaken, pretty sure that the timing on these Rebs is pre-set by the factory and doesn't need to be adjusted.........Just follow the excellent tips in the link provided by Cagie, adjust your valves and that should do it.......

Mine has had a slight ticking sound from day one. I only get concerned when it changes to 'valve lash time ' pitch.

Wow, that is some good stuff! Thanks Cagie! I'll be doing that this weekend.
(Valve Lash Time) What's that? Doesn't sound good...

You remove the valves, tie them to the ends of a whip and beat... Wait, no, that's something else!
He means it's time to adjust the valves.

Some engines just have particular sounds that you as the rider get to know as 'normal'. When you know the bike you will be able to pick up on subtle changes in sounds and one of those is the valves ticking. Sometimes the lack of will indicate that something needs adjusting.

Agreed.......some "ticking" might be considered normal and if it goes away after the oil starts circulating, I wouldn't worry about it......If it was valve "clatter", like someone playing the castanets inside there, it'd be time for a valve adjustment....

Mine just has a slight ticking sound. Should I just leave it alone for now?
