Detroit Police Department Rebels?
Someone on a Yahoo group for Rebels said they have a former Detroit PD Rebel.
Any body know what the DPD used them for? Training? Cheap urban patrol?
Inquiring minds want to know.

Don't know about training, but definitely cheap urban patrol, yes. Both Rebels and Nighthawk 250s. I think they still use them. I saw a couple of the Nighthawks parked across the street from Comerica Park last summer.
Detroit Public Schools has them, too...or at least, they used to. Waste is an ongoing issue in that school system, which has been insolvent for as long as I can remember. A couple of years ago, there was a big story about a warehouse full of things DPS purchased and never used. "Motorcycles" were on the list. When I looked at the picture, there was our venerable Rebel, front and center! They can't manage money worth a damn, but at least they have good taste!

I can see the Rebel being very practical for urban police work. You don't need an impressive top speed in heavy traffic, and cops have radios anyway. It will get you where you want to be really quick if you aren't subject to traffic laws. I could cut my commute time in half if I could turn on the flashers and split lanes, run lights, etc.

In california you can "whiteline" or at least you can when I was there. They had to allow all bikes to do that because they were allowing the cops to do that. I don't know how it is now.

As far as I know it's legal here too, but I wouldn't do it. Cagers are too unpredictable.

Ya, I would like to, but I don't think I actually would.
Behind a cage is one thing, but between two of them??? haha

That's why DC used the Rebel for many years as a patrol bike. Light and nimble, they could cut through heavy downtown traffic with ease. Try that with a 40+ inch wide handlebar on a 850 pound V2K Vulcan with its chopper-like wheelbase and frame geometry...
