Chain Problem

I own a Honda Rebel 250CMX, the chain is clanging against the chain guard, I tighten up the chain a few weeks ago, chain is still tight, but still clanging and now brown dust is being thrown onto my back rim from the chain, HELP! Do you think it needs oil? If so, what kind of oil should I purchase for it?

Thanks in advance for your help!

If your chain is slapping your gonna have to get a new chain soon! Sledpartsguy on ebay has KMC chains for the rebel cheap and hes a fast shipper too- I got my clutch paltes from him too. Some lube is important, get the teflon Dry wax at lowes is what I recommend. make sure you check your chain after every 100-200 miles for slack in it and keep it between 5/8 to 1 inch of slack. best luck bro!

Hey Mavriex,

Thanks for this information. I'll check out the wax at Lowe's and look into purchasing a new chain.

I'm heading out to Myrtle Beach soon and would like my Rebel in tip top shape before I trailer it down South!

The Teflon dry wax spray is made by DuPont. I'm using it, so far, so good. If your chain is bad, take a look at your sprockets! A bad sprocket can make a new chain go bad quick!!!

The general rule of thumb is to replace the sprockets anytime you replace the chain. In all actuality, we don't like to spend money when we don't have to! If the chain has some back and forth movement between the teeth without the sprocket moving, it's time to replace!

A tight chain shouldn't be clanging on anything! When you check for tightness, grab the the "upper" chain and the "lower" chain, one at a time and pull it up and down to see how much deflection there is. One of them will deflect more than the other, that's the one you use as the tightness "indicator". Adjust for 5/8th to 1 inch of slack.

As Guba said, a tight chain shouldn't be slapping against the chain guard. Have you checked to make sure that the chain guard isn't bent in anywhere's ?

Proper chain free play is a must as well as the chain lube as mentioned by others. As far as sprockets go, what year is your Reb ? If it's an older model, the sprockets might need changing out, but you can usually gauge that by looking at the sprocket teeth. The sprocket teeth should still be pointing straight up....a worn sprocket that needs replacing will have what they call "hooked teeth".....this is where the wear pattern of the teeth look slanted ("hooked") and pointing away from straight up........

Also, the slapping noise could be the plastic slider on the frame is broken.

Something is not right and when it involves the chain be careful. Probably best not to ride the bike until you figure it out.
