Bike Insurance.....how much?
What are you all paying for insurance?
Last year my full coverage was about $150. This year they want $270 for basic on an '85 Rebel 250. I was quoted $59. Paid that and got a bill for over $200 more. No tickets or accidents. Michigan wants over $150 for their fees alone. (in addition to agents fee) Actual bike is only $59. MI sucks.
I checked with larger online insurance companies only to be told that they dont insure the Honda Rebel.
Any thoughts or ideas. I dont like paying about the same as I do with my auto. The bike should be much less. I need to move to Tennesse!

Pay the minimum with Progressive in Lousyana; $95, which includes roadside assistance. Have only liability coverage.

I pay $27 a year for basic minimum liability in AZ, without any extras, from Dairyland/Sentry for my '04 Rebel. Full coverage, with a $500 deductible, would be about 10 times more, and the bike is valued extremely low by insurance companies in AZ. They don't use KBB here, it's usually about half. So obviously the bike is not worth it. It is very unlikely to be stolen, as it is ridden only for fun, and it is parked in the living room. If I crash it, I've got bigger problems than the bike.
I also have roadside assistance, but not through the insurance company. I got it from Paragon Motor Club, and it covers all my bikes and cars for $85 a year, which includes 100 miles of free towing. Jerry.

Michigan has screwy insurance laws. I cant insure just my bike I must have a car insured as well. So I pay $600 a year for the car and now the want $270 for the bike. I can only drive one at a time. The Rebel isnt worth $270 a year except for gas savings. In 25 years of driving I have never had a claim.
I just have always hated MI; I guess this is just another excuse to move back to Vegas. (When my kid turns 1

That sounds like a good case for a sharp attorney to take on settlement. Sounds like the state is saying you HAVE to have a car to ride a bike. Is that correct?

There is definitely something wrong without that car thing. Many people only have a bike, and no car. there has to be provisions for that. Obviously if you have a car, and use it, it has to be insured. I have 2 cars and a truck, but only one of the cars and the truck are insured, the other car is a collector car, and is not registered or insured. I don't know what kind of car you have, Both my car and truck are mid '60s models, and I pay about $200 a year each for them, again for state required minimum liability only. The car and truck are insured by Farmers, they have by far the best rates, and I have been with them for about 30 years, same time as I have been with Dairyland. Farmers cannot come close to Dairyland on the bikes. I also have my house insured with Farmers. Jerry.

With Liability, Uninsured Motorist, Collision, and Other than collision.

Many people are paying way to much for insurance. I had a nice long talk with my insurance agents, and found a bunch of stuff that could be cut out. Farmers even reduced my premiums if I am the only driver of my car and truck, and I went for it, because I am the only one who drives them.
Flat out, the only reason I have insurance is because my state requires it, so I made sure I got only what the state requires, and nothing else. None of my bikes, with the possibility of my new Ninja 500, are worth insuring, and I am just taking the risk. The chances of any of the bikes being stolen are somewhere between 1% and 0%, so a loss would almost have to be a crash. I have never crashed, but like I said, if I did, I'd have bigger problems than loss of the bike. If I had been paying full coverage for all my bikes all these years, I'd have spent enough money to have bought a brand new Vette. I don't need uninsured or underinsured motorist, because my employer has excellent medical benefits, that cover everything, including motorcycle accidents. In fact, they are not even allowed to ask how the injuries occurred.
Now, if you don't have medical insurance, or have really crappy medical insurance, it's a whole different story. But if you do get uninsured and underinsured motorist, make sure to read the fine print, and see exactly what they pay. A serious motorcycle accident can put you in the hospital for weeks or even months, and leave you with issues that will require care for the rest of your life. Jerry.
