Battery and then Carb?

Hi Everyone,

I have a Honda Rebel 250 2002 . And I am trying to recharge the battery, but it doesn't seem to be holding a charge after 30 hours. So, do I need a new battery? How long do you have to let it charge before you know you need a new battery.

What is a good website to order a battery from?

Before the battery gave out, the bike would not idle... So, I assume there is something wrong in the carburator.

Also, I was going to try to clean out the carb, but I know nothing. I saw an illustration of the carburator, which will definitely help me out with this.

I was on the right side of the bike and I found this really big black tube that was not attached to anything. It had a slant cut to it. Does anyone know what this tube is and does it need to be attached to anything? One end is attached to something, but one end is not??

Can I just take the carb top off and spray it with something? I did remove the gas out of the bottom of the carb.

How do you remove the gas from the gas tank, so that I can put clean gas in there?

Should I not do any work until I get a new battery?

Thanks for your help.

To remove the gas from the tank:

Take a fuel can or a bucket, place it under by the petcock. Set the petcock to "off", disconnect the fuel line from the carb, hold it towards the bucket and turn the petcock to "pri". This may take a while, but it will drain the tank the easiest way!

i wouldnt rush into any other issues untill you sort out your battery its easy to start chasing your tail if you try and look at too much at one time

If the charger is working properly, I would think the battery is no good. Do a search for Yuasa maintenance free batteries with the number YTX7L-BS. I like Yuasa because they have pretty good quality batteries. Many batteries for our bikes are made in China and the quality isn't there. Beware those that claim to be replacements for the Yuasa.

How long have you had the bike? Did it idle properly when you got it? Dit it sit for a long time before you got it? If it was running OK, and then developed the idle issue, I would suggest you add 5-6 ounces of Sea Foam to a tank of gas, or drain the carb, add straight Sea Foam, and let it sit while you are waiting for the new battery. If it still idles poorly, you probaly need to disassemble the carb and clean it. A service manual will walk you through the process.

I've had the bike since 2002, but took it to a dealer to have idle problem worked on. they did something to the carb. but it hasn't run for about a year now, so I am trying to get it up and running. called a mechanic today, because i don't know anything, except to charge and hook up new battery. so, i guess i will order the Yuasa battery. I have the Sea Foam. Thanks for all your responses. I'll work on it and get back to you. I will see if I can drain all the gas out of it, too. Thanks.

Also, I was told initiallly to use high test fuel. Now I am reading that most of you don't use the high test, or a combination of regular and medium grade? What do you sugggest?
Thank you.

I use 87 octane and it seems to do well in mine. Honda recommends 87 or above. Your results may vary, so go with what works best in your bike. Jack offers a carb cleaning service: Brake and Carburetor service

as does carbworx.com.
