Hello folks, I haven't been on here in a while.
Wife never did get her motorcycle license, she just lost interest. So I ride the Rebel now and then on my commute to work, it takes some of the pressure off the Nighthawk.
I rolled it out of the barn last night to start it up for the first time this year (yeah I know, my bad) and the battery was dead as a hammer. I put the smart charger on it, but I'm not holding my breath. The battery is dated 2012, and being as flat as it was last night I'll be very surprised if it takes a charge. But a new battery won't break the bank, and we'll be back on the road again.
Basically I just wanted to say "hi y'all".
Welcome back! I always recommend Yuasa batteries because they are very good quality, but I've recently learned that they also produce Motocross batteries. Same factory, same process, same quality, usually at a lower price. So when I need to replace my Yuasa, think I'll go with a Motocross.
Make sure to get an Absorbent Glass Mat type battery (AGM) rather than the traditional and cheaper flooded cell type. The AGMS work better and last longer.
Even if it survives, it will still have been damaged by partial sulfation thus hastening its premature demise. A battery tender will pay for itself in a couple of years just in increased battery life and reduced replacement costs.
Yep. I know about battery tenders, keep one on the Nighthawk and the Farmall Cub, I just never got around to putting one on the Rebel. Dang it.
Anyway, thanks for the greetings.
New Yuasa battery installed but no start. Cleaned the carburetor and she's back on the road. It starts a little hard, I might have missed a port. If it doesn't straighten out after a couple of tanks with Seafoam I'll take it down again and soak it as suggested in other threads.
Rode it to work today, about 20 miles. WOT is about 66 mph, I can just exceed 70 on the right stretch of road. This is what I was getting before (I'm 6'1" and about 220lbs) so I'm happy with that. The speedo is a little optimistic, the GPS reads about 3mph slower IIRC from tests when we first got it.
Its a fun bike to ride, and I sure can't complain about the fuel economy. I even passed a pickup truck this morning, that was good.
I'm 5'8" 160# and for me WOT on flat interstate pegs the speedometer which proclaims 85, 75 on a normal uphill stretch of interstate, on the flats I have no trouble keeping up with my friends at 75.
