04 rebel petcock screen question

1st time pulling intank screen- in the middle i saw what looks like a piece of rubber . is the rubber just to keep the screen frame straight or does it serve another purpose?
thanks

As far as I know there shouldn't be any rubber in the screen other than the o-ring...

edit: oh, you know what now that I think about it, I think there may be a round thing in the middle that keeps the tube and screen straight. I took mine out a long time ago when I reassembled the tank it blocked the 'main' tank tube. Until I figured it out I was having to run on reserve all the time.

I'd probably remove it, less chance it will plug the petcock tube.
