Worst place to have a flat
So I'm riding home from work tonight and the back end starts getting a squirley and worse, really quick. At first I thought I had just hit a hot tar patch. But as I slowed down I knew right off the bat that it was a flat.
I just put a new tire on last month! Complete with new tube. The ironic part is, the old tire was so worn that you could feel your finger touch the other finger through the tire. lol. Yeah, I really pushed the envelope on that one! So I know that I have plenty of tread on the new tire.
The worst part of it was, it was too close to home to even bother to try and patch, but far enough away from home that I sweated up a storm walking it home in the dark. 2 miles! With the engine idling and in first gear, I walked it home at 4 mph.
Tomorrow, I'll investigate the situation. It has my curiosity!

Didn't take long to find the problem. 4" nail! I must have picked it up in the turn. It felt like I rolled on a piece of gravel.
After patching the tube, and setting the bead again, it looks like I'll be needing a new tire. The point of exit is agape like it'll eventually pop. Don't trust it!!!!

Cover the holes on the inside of the tire with a Heavy (thick) patch . Rotate the patched tube 180 (patch on the other side of the tire) and ride it.

The side of the tube has a good 1/2" long slit, looks kinda scary. I'm still using the tube, put a patch on it. The stealership doesn't have any tubes in stock. But I have a brand new tire on.
Kinda ruined my plans of going up to Lake Erie and taking a swim. As hot as it is, just the thought brought relief. So much for breaking in my new athletic flip-flops.

Wow, man sorry, that happened to you so soon after getting a new tire! What a bummer!
As I read your story, I realized that I would not have thought to idle the bike in first on the way home. I would have tried to push it two miles in neutral. Not the sharpest tool in the shed, me.

Agreed. You should be O.K. with properly done inside patches on the tire and probably a new tube just for a bit more piece o' mind.......but, HOLY MOLY, Guba! That's one of the worst nail pick-ups I've seen! If you hadn't actually felt it, I'd have been wondering who I might've ticked off at work, LMAO! Glad you managed to stop safely and get home safely.....walking is better than a ride in an ambulance.......Ride Safe......

It'd be professional grade....any tire shop or garage that repairs car tires would be able to do it. They use a disc grinder to rough up the area around the hole, apply professional grade adhesive, then apply a very good quality patch......

If they still made them, a hot (vulcanized) patch would probably do. Been a long time since I was on the commercial side of tire repair, but they used to make an extremely tough, large, cold patch that might work for you. I believe you'd need to rebalance the tire though.
