Seriously considering a stupid idea
There is a three day event in Chester, NY I'd like to attend this July. 1600 miles one way. I could do that in three days, taking reasonable breaks without being unrealistic. Change the oil before I leave, and take the long way back through Richmond and Atlanta, and give it five days. It's only two hundred miles longer, but what's the hurry? Just an idea at this point, but I might do it.

Go for it! I am heading out myself on a 4500 mile round trip, PA to TX via FL and back. Backroads and not in a hurry.
I would think about at least one oil change in your trip. You can pick up a couple of quarts and a tin foil pan. Head out to a place where you can dispose of the oil and change it right there. I plan on at least two on my trip with some spare in the saddlebag to top it off.
Also should consider checking the bike periodically for loose stuff. I know I've lost a few things in my travels due to lack of attention. So I'll be paying a little closer attention.
You stray through this neck of the woods, you got a place to stay.

Thanks. if I go, I was planning to change the oil before I leave, and while I'm there. Since I plan to fart around some on the way back, probably once more along the way. Maybe behind a Walmart or Autozone. I'm still not sure I'm going to be able to make the trip at all. If I don't, I'll at least take a few days' ride through the hill country.

I am planning a 3000 mile trip to Portland, OR and back in the next 6 weeks or so, but will be taking the Vulcan 750, for time, speed, and comfort reasons. I'm planning on taking my time, doing only 750 miles per day, staying at a Motel 6 one night on the way up, and one night on the way down. I will be spending a few days with my sister and brother in law while there. I've already done this trip on the Vulcan twice with no issues. I have no doubts about the Rebel being able to make it, but it would be less comfortable, and take longer.
Oh, and I would be careful around Richmond, if what I heard is true. I know someone who used to live there, and they told me it was the most crime infested city in the U.S., even worse than Chicago, Detroit, and New York City. Never been there myself. Jerry.

I'd rather take my Vulcan for a trip like this, but I don't have one yet.

If you are coming this way, you can spend the night if you like. I'll let you sit on my Vulcan.

IMO it is not a stupid idea at all. I envy you! I wish I had the time for a nice trip like that.

used to live in Richmond VA, it's nickname then was "The biggest little small town in America" with (at the time) the fourth highest murder rate per capita in the country.
Prefer Norfolk, where we lived before

Fridg, if you go through Ohio, you have a place to stay and make a pit stop here.
