Mornin' All...

As cTc is already aware, I recently sold a Triumph hardtail frame to a youngblood who's going to do his own build. Delivered the frame & some misc. parts to his place & checked out his stock 1980 CM400, which he's thinking about bobbing as well.

There's another guy who was interested in a CB750 custom, but he opted for & just bought himself a 1978 Kawasaki KZ750 project(haven't seen it yet, but looking forward to hooking up & checking that out).

Anyways, I was casually looking up the CM400 & KZ750 on www.bikez.com to see what the basic specs were. Noticed that they've got the standard specs & then "reduced effect" specs, which can be the difference between 43 hp or 27 hp! HUH ? LOL!

Can someone please educate me on what constitutes "reduced effect" ? TIA...

(Any possible info on these 2 models would also be cool to learn about. I could see getting into bobbing the CM400 & offerred to help him with both of his projects, like I need more projects, LMAO!)

I'm honestly not sure, cTc. Whenever I've seen this "reduced effect" mentioned at bikez.com, the pics of standard & "reduced effect" versions both look stock.

One local here is wondering if it means "Californai model" ? Still unsure, but find the difference in hp ratings to be substantial.

Gearjammer, you now got me curiosity about "Reduced Effect". I went online to see if could find some infor on the subject but found nothing, so i put out the question on a couple of boards i'm a member of to see if anyone could answer that question. If i find out anything i'll post the infor.

I think I have an idea to what the term "reduced effect" means...

In Norway (and the rest of europa, i think) there are different "classes" of motorcycles.

-125cc and a maximum 15hp=Light motorcycle
(16 yrs old to drive)

-125cc to 600cc and a maximum 32hp=Mid weight motorcycle
(18 yrs old to drive)

-125cc to "unlimited" cc with 35hp or more=Heavy motorcycle
(21 yrs old to drive)

This means that some bikes, for example Honda cbr 600 comes as both "mid-wight" motorcycle(34hp)" And as "normal" with ca 110hp.

Interesting stuff, Chopper Rick & Are. This question has been bugging me ever since seeing it mentioned on that bikez.com site.

So, there's at least a possibility that the bike manufacturers actually provided different versions of the same models aimed at different age groups ?

Sold a motor to the same youngblood who's building a Triumph bobber & spoke with him tonight. He's thinking about selling his CM400 for around $600-$800 to boost his own build fund & I'm going to give it some thought as a possible bobber candidate. www.bikez.com rates it at 43 hp, losing the airbox & running straights would probably bump it up to close to 50 hp. He's still undecided & so am I...would actually prefer another 450 Reb, but we'll see.

Gearjammer, here's some more infor i found on another forum on "Reduced Effect".

"The auto makers did this in the late 60's, on the factory Hot Rods, for insurance affordability...
& bragging rights @ the race-track..
eg: Vette, Novas', Chevelles, GTO, 442, Mopar Hemi's, & many more.

Plus it was cool to see a lower HP rated car just "Fry the back tires off" .... You just knew it was more than listed...(Good ol daze)

But they did NOT reduce the HP or effect. They just BS'd on the #'s.. Listing their H-power as much lower.

HD- Modern or older lists HP off the motor alone, not what is actually getting to the ground.
(Big Difference) actually a form of "Reduced Effect" also.

But to be fair, I think the vrod ( ) lists Hp on the ground!
For $31,000. You can p/up a vrod "Destroyer" RACE-ONLY w/165 HP ON the ground.
& run 9.6 second quarters @ (Local boutique) near you.
Be sure to order a Full helmet w/mirrored face shield, so no-one sees ya racing it !!! ...."
